You are right, done they way you described but does it really, effectively work the glutes and ham's in a meaningful manner?
load the bar up and the glutes does the majority of the work load.
lessen the load considerably, lock the knee flex the spine and you've got a perfect low back strengthening exercise for which it was intended.
a perfect accompaniment to the squat.
