We have 6 squats racks, 3 platforms and 3 benches.

They get filled up. It's what SHOULD happen at a gym.

Most health spa's only have 2 squat racks at best.... And they rarely get squatted in.

At the FF i went to, there was a pair of squat stands, a power cage and a smith.

I had 0 interest in the latter, but the prior 2 were always full of kids doing pendlay rows, shrugs or curls. Nothing wrong with either of those exercises, but they don't require a cage or squat stands.

So it's almost midnight, and I'm laying on a couch in the city, waiting to catch a plane in 5 hours to go down an referee the NSW state powerlifting champs.

I obviously can't sleep, and I have a million things running through my head, almost all about my gym.

I have a seriously awesome team behind getting PTC to where it is today. Firstly, Markos and my old man for helping me get the ball rolling. These 2 guys are solely responsible for the operation getting under way.
My finance and my inlaws have also helped tremendously, and continue to do so. Tish works full time as an interior designer, then drives an hour to come and train, as well as doing all the PTC accounting, helping with GPC websites, posters and nationals, and preps my meals..... She's One fucking busy lady, and the one person I rely on.

Since the move, the gym is getting busier and busier. It's great to see.
All the 15 new lifters except 2 are complete novices. If anybody reading think's that's not a good thing, as they aren't "strong", well you'd be completly wrong.

It's the exact thing I want.

I want people to start training in a gym, like a gym should be trained in.

All of the new clients love what we do, and are in awe of some of our more experienced lifters, and the great thing is - the more experienced lifters love seeing novices getting involved and really take the time to help people out if they need it. It's why I enjoy my gym as an owner, a coach and a lifter. It's like a big family, and no egos.

This was sent to me in an email this evening by a team of lifters that came to PTC for a session:

Best session in a long time!
Thanks heaps for letting us come down on such short notice.
Your gym is an absolute credit to you, you should be very proud...

...Matt and I couldn't shut up the whole car ride home about how good the gym and its how a real gym should look like.
Thanks man, we will be back for sure.

Add this to compliments from well established powerlifters like Gawain Jonston, Gregg Gordon, Nick Rankin, Adam Coe, Daymon Hayhow, Odell Manual as well as guys like Frank Manning and Ron Brich, it's hard not to feel a little satisfied with how far we have come as a crew, and the direction we are all heading in Brisbane.

In the gym we have a wealth of too notch power lifters, people like Ricky who just squatted 4x5 at 270kg, Loz who pulled 250kg from a 60mm deficit, mike who just squatted 200kg x3 at under 80kg...... The list goes on, to many awesome lifters to list, but I'm sure you all get the idea.

Then we have a heap of new lifters like Alex O, Matt, Sharpy, Drew..... They have taken to lifting like ducks to water.
Here is a shot of Sharpy today having his first every heavy deadlift.
He and drew are going to win me Callans Elikio bar when they bench 100kg in a couple of months.

I suppose this post, was probably more for a journal than a public update, but I just wanted to share how impressed and happy I am with all of the lifters at PTC, and that they want to train at a facility that they think will help them further their strength and conditioning goals.

They are man, and it will.

I should mention that sharpie had never deadlifted Benched or squatted before coming to PTC.

Thanks for Reffereeing the comp mate. Means a lot. Eventually ill get a fair more ref accredited apart from me and Karen.

The atmosphere of a ptc is something u cannot put a finger on. And I think this is what drives us as owners to work those hours and our spouses to put up with us. My wife looks after the finances and our newborn by herself while I work the 12 hours a day. She knows this is a passion.

U do wonder where its all headed sometimes. But if u love your job does one really care?

cheers
trent

Sounds awesome Scott. You deserve the success you've had there and sounds like plenty more will be coming.

Awesome Scott, thats the same atmosphere and environment we want here in Perth and any suggestions you may have are entirely welcome.

More PTC hoodies on the way.

If you want a particular size, let me know here.
I wear a large for the length, it's not tight.
$50 pick up or plus $10 postage.

The have the PTC KB on the front, 1 long pocket.

Heaps of stuff going on at the moment...
I have started training a union prop. he is about 6'1, 115kg, fairly muscular and 31yo.
He wants have the edge over the other props, and has come to us to increase his field strength and conditioning.

To be honest, I think union is a silly game, and know little about the roles of each player.
After a long chat with Neil about the game, and what he is expected to do, we have some idea on which direction his training need to be pointed in.

From Wiki:
The props "prop up" the hooker in the scrum.[27] They form part of the front row of the scrum and push against the oppositions props. The loosehead prop is positioned to the left of the hooker and their head will be on the outside of the scrum when it engages. The tighthead is to the right of the hooker with their head positioned between the opposition hooker and the opposition loosehead prop.[27] The prop's main role is to provide stability at the scrum and support the hooker in quickly winning the ball.[95] At the lineout the prop's role is to support the jumper as they compete for the ball. They are usually positioned at the front of the lineout with a jumper in between them. They are also often involved in lifting jumpers when receiving kick-offs.[92] While scrummaging is still seen as their main responsibility, modern props are also expected to contribute in attack and defence.[95]
Props have to take in pressure from the locks and loose forwards pushing from behind and the opposition pushing against them, so they are often among the strongest players in a team. Some of the more successful props have short necks and broad shoulders to absorb this force as well as powerful legs to drive the scrum forward.[95] Since the game has become professional non-specialist props or hookers cannot play in the front row. If, through sendings-off or injuries, a team does not have enough specialist front row players, the scrums become 'uncontested' (i.e. no pushing is allowed and the team putting the ball into the scrum wins it).[93] On their own scrum the loosehead's role is to provide the hooker with a clear view to strike the ball while the tighthead tries to keep the scrum stable.[96] When the opposition is putting the ball in the tighthead attempts to disrupt the opposing hooker or loosehead, making it difficult for them to win the ball. The loosehead is generally the stronger of the two props.[96]

Responsibilities

[edit]In the Scrum
Support the hooker
Push back the other team
Hold the front row together

[edit]In Open Play
Follow the ball, in order to support the runner
Mark and tackle the other team's big players
Be active in the ruck
Be ready to run the ball into the other team's defense

[edit]In Lineouts
Lift the lock into the air
Be ready to stop the other team if they steal the throw-in
Some points that Neil made:
- Need to be very fast over 0-20m
- Need to be very strong and tight when locked in a scrum.
- Props are responsible for the first big drive in the scrum, so explosive power is essential.
- After the initial drive the props then act as link for their teams power to drive the scrum toward the opposition. This is tough on the prop as they can buckle, dive down or pop up out of the scrum.

We will do some work with:
Powerlifts - Working mostly in 5's and 3's
Prowler sprints - undecided whether to go max weight for 10m under 15sec, or lighter weight but faster sprints (see football players adding weight to ankle to increase kicking power)
Yoke runs - heavy between 10-15sec to provide brutal core strength and down right badassness
Water filled keg or sandbag press - working on 3's, 5's and 8's to assist in lifting the lock.

He does plenty of scrum work at training so I really only need to take care of his strength and conditioning.

We will test the progress with his sprint speeds over various distances, and his training/on-field performance.

This should be fun.

No worries :),
Hoodies ordered, should be here in a under 2 weeks. Went with grey with black writing. I got a few extra in various sizes, so hit me up if you want one.

Alex squatted up to a PB of 260kg today, more left in the tank. We took the stance out Wider, and made his feet much straighter. Seems to be working very well for him.
Be also bench 135kg for reps.

Ricky squatted 5x3 at 150kg for some speed reps, and benched up to 80kg+orange bands for 10x3. He is working light and fast, he has a skills test day on Friday. Hopeing for 310/195/320 at least.

Kosta came in for some technique coaching, we worked on the big 3.
He ended up at 220kg for a 5kg deadlift PB, made some adjustments to his bench and squat and taught him how to wrap. He's looking fucking solid at the moment.

Tish and Michelle have both started squatting in wraps. They both squatted 72.5kg for 5x3, very easily. Tish also benched 40kg for 3 singles.

Mel squatted up to 35kg for 3x5, then smashed through "kill me now" with Michelle.

Ben squatted up to an easy 190kg for a single, and Kurt pulled up to a 210kg single.

Stephen and Hamish both benched new PB's, they actually did them for reps. They're both killing their programs at the moment. Hamish also brought his missus in, she had beautiful technique.

Working with Jess at the moment on getting more mobile, she currently moves as well as 2 lead pencils taped together. She showed great determination finishing off with some hard prowler/carry work.

Aj is still squatting to the box at the moment while we work on his mobility. He's doing well and should be free squatting by the end of next week.

Young guy named Will walked past and stuck his head in, ended up doing a session with me. We went through deads and bench. He pulled 80kg 3x5.
He plays NRL and is about 19 and would weigh about 70kg wringing wet. Seems keen to train with us to build size and strength.

New guy Leon joined up today, he lives in West End. He came out for a coaching session at the old gym. He liked what he saw so he joined up seeing as we are now closer. He squatted 110kg, but missed 115kg.

.....I had planned on squatting :/

Thanks again for today mate, i wish i had come in a lot earlier.
I've learned heaps today from you and looking forward on improving.
You have a great gym mate.
Keep up the good work Scott!!!
