Thought I'd throw this out there. Coming to the end of this program German Volume Training

So many threads and posts about programs on ausbb that I'm finding it hard to what to research to work out what I do next. Would appreciate being pointed in the right direction by those of you in the know!

I've been training for 9 months now, but some of this has been sport specific, e.g. plyometrics. I definitely CAN'T do the weights mentioned by PTC at the beginning of this thread (bench 100kg, squat 140kg and deadlift 180kg).

My goal is to build strength and size/weight, getting to about 80kg (started at 66kg, now 72kg), and then maintain that there, lean up and refocus on sports again (agility, power etc).

Ultimately I don't want to be huge, prefer a fit athletic look, and want the extra strength and size to support my sports.

Given all the above, should I be doing this beginner program or look for something else?

Appreciate any ideas!

Starting Strength, I switched to it after doing 6 months of the PTC beginners program (as an untrained novice/fatty), have made decent strength gains in the 3 months since, would have the 140kg 1RM squat well in hand now, hoping to hit it for 3x5 within 2 weeks.

The PTC beginners program would also be a good choice if you have a preference toward higher volume.

But seeing PTC's "minimum weights before moving off the beginners program" made me think I am more beginner than I thought?

You are probably right there...

i've only being doing it a couple of weeks but I see it as a benefit to building speed..

and in the off days to speed\agility work?

At the moment I wish I could train at least a little every day... probably over training if I did though, but 3 days + sport is probably all I can fit in.

Row
Bench press
Curl

I'd start with the press when the back is fresh and well, just works a lot of muscle around the shoulder

I place the exercise in order of most muscle, biggest mucles...worked down to the least

The squat is primarily a lower body exercise
The SLDL is a good accompaniment to the squat

A supported row is just all round back builder

Muscles for the bench will still have fresh strength.

Hey Goosey, I started the PTC beginners program, but replaced barbell curls with pull-ups. How would you run the program, would it be like this:

I think If you really worked heard on this routine you would not have enough gas to do pull-ups justice.

But by all means give it a crack

Ok I have the SS book and videos... a lot to read and watch, so this will take time.

I like the look of the Wichita Falls variant.

Obviously need to use my first sessions to get the starting weights right, and the form right.

Watching the videos shows me how wrong some things I've been shown are. I got shown some things by a PT I had some free sessions with when I joined my gym, and for example what I've been doing for squats doesn't line up that well with the SS demonstrations :/

In fact, most people in my gym would be doing these wrong... the joys of Fitness First..

Anyway. I start this program tomorrow, and train solo... is it worth considering a (decent..) PT in initial sessions to make sure I get all this right?

How'd everyone else go learning the correct form - solo or with help?

I was in a similar position, I found that the SS book and DVD was enough to get me going and moving through the initial novice gains. After a while as the weight started to increase I then started to post up some form check videos and got some 1 on 1 training sessions and attended a workshop at PTC Sydney.

The theory behind starting strength is you can do it yourself, why not give it a go? If not, you don't want personal training sessions, you want strength training sessions if that makes sense.

Either way, good luck :)

I was in a similar position, I found that the SS book and DVD was enough to get me going and moving through the initial novice gains.
