Why is everyone trying to squat so much?

The barbell squat is the most result producing exercise ever invented, but dangerous as hell.
Which makes complete sense.
 
My squat sucks but it has still improved considerably over the past year up to 140kg max (from less than 100).

I think it has improved the way I feel in general. Sounds like an absurd thing to say.... Maybe it's due to other things.
 
I'll stick with my 80kg smith machine squats thanks!

Got beast mode avatar, and squats less than my misses…lol

PS Smith machine squats is what damages your knees more than BB squats
