Why is everyone trying to squat so much?

I've been reading some Logs on here and can't understand the need to squat so heavy??
Its bad for your knees and back.

When in real life will you need to squat 200kgs?
 
Heavy Is A Relative Term, And Back & Knee Injuries Can Result From Any Life Activity,...That Is To Say Back And Knee Injuries Are Not Restricted To One Particular Exercise Or Daily Activity...
 
You ask a question about why everyone is lifting so much weight in the powerlifting/strength section?
Isn't that the aim of the game?

You Asked About Why The Need,..The Need Is The Result Of Muscle And Nervous System Adaptation. Once You Adapt To A Particular Load, You Move Forward If You Desire To Make More Progress... And One Of The Ways Of Moving Forward Is To Add More Weight Onto The Bar...
