Hey everyone.
Now that the nats are done with, its time to look forward to the next comp. For us Brisbane guys, this is the "National Big Bench in Paradise" comp.
It will be RAW and Equipt, with NO need for qualifying total to enter. Its also open to the general public, not just CAPO members. However, anybody that enters must wear a soft suit. Ive seen them going for as little as $35 on some site, Im sure you can find the money :p

Jeff mentioned that a few people from Victoria will be coming up, so it sounds like it should be a good sized comp.

Name : CAPO's ‘National Big Bench in Paradise’

Date: Saturday October 23rd,

Venue: Healthworks West End, 33 Vulture St, West End, Brisbane

Time: Lifting Starts at 1pm, Weigh ins at 10am-12pm

Cost: $35 for CAPO members, $50 for non members.

Also, all entry forms need to be in by Friday October 8th, download a generic entry form from the Capo website, fill it out and post your entry fees and completed forms to:
CAPO QLD
PO BOX 187
Qld 4064

I'm keen to come watch, I doubt I'd be any competition but wouldn't mind seeing some people throw up some big weights for sure.

Okay, I have to step in here.

You guys that are happy to watch and not compete, why?

If only the winner entered comps, we wouldnt have any.

Jeff is an elite bench presser. Do you guys think he started that way?

Do you think he entered his first comp and benched 220kg?

I did a newsletter, explaining that nobody got stronger by watching. Competition is THE best motivator. If you think a lift sucks, enter a comp and train it hard.

If you think you'll wait till you catch up, you never will, trust me.

I can give you guys shitloads of examples of lifters at PTC who never compete because theyre not strong enough, so they wait. Meanwhile, the gap increases.

It takes a lot to organize and promote a comp, I know. I ****ing hate it when lifters say "can I watch". Yeah, thats why I'm organizing it, for you to watch.

Mike and Michael, for ****s sake, get amongst it. Jeff will hold this comp every year. Enter now, set a standard, then come back and beat it.

Max benched 60kg when he first entered a comp, you guys bench MUCH more than that. He's nearly doubled that, you can do the same, but not by watching.

This is intended for all those that figure why enter if I cant win.

Sydney has had no CAPO presence, were trying to change that. Pete is holding a comp soon. Jeff is doing his best, support him now if you wish to get stronger later.

You guys should be grateful to Jeff for holding this comp, I would love to fly up and bring some lifters to compete.

So far he has

Scott
Matt
Michael
Ghosty

I'm off to round up some more

am keen as!!

The only thing will be the cost, (it is tight as here just now) will I have to buy a soft suit etc or will the regulations be more relaxed as this is open to the public. Will it be the 24hour weigh in etc also?

It is basically 12 weeks away so it is enough for anyone that wants to enter to focus on a goal lift and train for it..

I will be happy if I can do a comp standard pb at this, that is my goal.

Markos,

Good point...

But I am a weak bastard. I'd probably be the weakest bench in the comp at 90kg odd at present. But then again, if I have that long to plan I could maybe specialise for the period and see if I can't top 100kg. Promise noone will laugh!!!?

Cheers,
Mike

Nobody EVER laughs at anyone else at comps.

I could only bench 25kg when I started, I have no right to laugh at anyone, and neither does any one else.

Once you go lift, you'll understand. Its not gym members, its lifters.

Unbelievably massive difference

PTC your right, thanks for the kick, my hesitation is because I thought it was soon and I still haven't touched a weight in atleast 3 weeks. Once I get back into it I'll have a goal for October 23rd, It's already in my calendar.

It'll be the best thing you've ever done, I guarantee you will love it.

Once you guys start lifting, you will realize you only ever really compete against yourself. I'm not making this shit up, its exactly how it will be.

All my guys simply try and lift more each time they compete.

yep exactly..... When you speak to fellow lifters very rarely will anyone talk about beating another person all they are conserned about is lifting the best they can and breaking PBS. If anyone is thinking about entering do as markos has said and jus enter. entering in a comp will drive you to train harder and progress.

Done! Its in my diary. But I'm going to need a coach. I've never had anyone coach me on form before or help me prep for a comp. If I start lifting at Jeff's gym I'm sure that will go a long way.

Cheers,
Mike

Definitley Mike some advice on building up towards October 23rd would be great, even just knowing what to expect. From the looks of things you and I are going to competing weight wise, we have very similar lifts :p. I'm keen already.

Dont know if there are too many better benchers than Jeff Lam from what I saw at the Nats.

Also possibly the nicest PL on the planet.

Now this is mean. My shoulder shits itself then someone holds a bench comp open to the public and in driving distance from me.

Dammit!

Hey guys, anyone wanting help on their bench or anything at all, my doors are always open. Just for everyone's info, there is a group of us that train heavy bench on a Saturday at my gym or at Mason's, usually around 10 or 11, if you give me your email i can confirm times and venue each week. I know Scott has gotten a lot out of coming to these sessions just before the Nats.

Jeff,

That is an awesome offer! And 10 or 11am Sat is perfect. I'll PM you my email but was planning on swinging by your new gym this weekend at about that time anyway to discuss joining and all that stuff. Of course, I was planning on bringing my gear and squeezing in a bench workout if possible...

Scott, Michael if you're interested we could meet there.

Cheers,
Mike

That is a very generous offer Jeff.
Mike, I will always be at Jeffs on saturday mornings. Just the little bits of advice go a long, long way.

EDIT: Mike, Jeff cant PM untill he has reached 10 posts.

Put in for the time off today, will be down around the 20th, best I could apply for, was hoping to have a catch up before hand, but looks like i may see you all on the day, or might try to catch up with some of the north brisy folk on thurs, or friday.
for some last minute pointers. The gym manager seems interested to help me with stuff and I have a few old power lifters here I could get pointers from.
