If you are using an appropriate load then there should be no particular breathing pattern, if you are working as hard as you should be you will be gasping for air, having said that you shouldn't hold your breath more than momentarily.
Lifting heavy reps you will be holding your breath each rep. If you can breath through the rep it isn't that heavy.

What rep range are you thinking?
More often than not the appropriate load for the correct starting weight will get you in the neighborhood of 8~12.
1 or 2 rep's is a different world
