Strength & Conditioning for footballers

Or guys that dont like sniffing others guys asses.

They prefer grabbing other guys' arses instead.

What relevance does a bench press have to a sportsman's strength? Can't believe even the pros at the AFL are so clueless.

I tried searching for "AFL squat record" , same with deadlift. Found nothing except a few rumours off a forum. Searched for bench press record and found an official challenge posted on afl.com.au.

Please dont limit this to AFL.

As you guys know Rory is aiming for a College Scholarship. He has interviewed with a handful of Division 1 schools. He will be playing with one of them next year.

I have been in talks with a coach from one, and Rory has had to answer questions with each one of them about his bench press.

No one has even mentioned any other lift.

So I have a dilemna, do I make Rory a better footballer or a better bencher?

Another problem I discussed with this coach is form. I explained that we are a PL gym, with competing lifters, so we all use correct form, are the numbers he's quoting to me done in correct form?

Of course he said yes. Rory keeps bombarding me with videos of college kids not touching there chests or bums way up high. They are simply inflating there numbers to get a scholarship, which is understandable.

But what should I do, prostitute myself?

Here's another funny anecdote. There is an ex NFL player who has a school for prospects. He wants Rory to go to Florida and train under him in December.

He told Rory he had to lose weight, as his BMI is 35, which makes him obese. He has never laid eyes on Rory, true story.

Max registers as overweight on the BMI, thats how f u c k e d it is, and this guy who runs a successful program still uses BMI.

I told Rory to ask the guy what kind of Dinosaur he rides, but Rory is too polite.

Dont think its just here that we have problems, they are everywhere.

Funny enough, more so since we certified all these experts, now they are all book learned, they must be correct.

I'm sure you guys have seen this ass clown before, a Strength coach, oh the shame

Markos what kind of weird gay porn are you watching???

I just read some info about a former australian junior discus champ who is now playing AFL (just drafted). He said he lost so much strength and weight that he is definitely not as strong as he once was. He used his bench press as an example. It has be integrated into society and I doubt it will go away.

And you are correct Markos most people have paper degrees and minimal experience under a in the trenches educated coach. So they are treated as experts and keep training other future experts with poor knowledge. Thats how I see it in my undergrad and now postgrad courses.

Penrith (NRL) set a goal for all players to deadlift and squat double their bodyweight and 1.5 times bench.

At least, that is what I read early in 2010.

As i cannot provide link, not enough posts yet, google article

NRL's strongest men revealed

Some strong players.

Summary of article

Manly halfback Kieran Foran, 88kg Kiwi teenager, bench-presses 170kg - almost twice his body weight.
Foran's teammate George Rose, has NRL bench-press record of 180kg, but he has strong competition from Bulldogs second-rower Micky Paea, Roosters youngster Martin Kennedy and Warriors forward Jacob Lillyman.
Titans speedster Esi Tonga made most of his line-breaks with speed and agility, but he still managed to produced the biggest lift recorded by strength and conditioning coaches this pre-season - a 230kg modified squat.
Incredibly, the 100kg Tongan international is able to squat heavier loads than Sharks powerhouse Luke Douglas and Learoyd-Lahrs, who both squat a bar-bending 220kg.
One of the most impressive performances of the off-season has come from Panthers' 20-year-old NRL rookie Sam McKendry, who has dropped 12kg since October while maintaining a 220kg deadlift for four repetitions.

Besides the bench numbers those are the amounts I would like to see on all league players not just the strongest of them.

Too deep? fcuk me......that was some bad squats.

I have read articles talking about athletes ie soccer, basketball and tennis not needing to do a full[/] squat since it's not what's expected on the field, court or other. What do I think? I think that's weird and when I coach it's always full depth squats.

Markos, I'll be working with VFL over the next few weeks with testing and selection for next year. I'll keep you up to date.....cool?

Don't these kids know they'll break their knees squatting that deep....they need to ease up.

LMAO @ "Great set, especially after a Baseball game" I sweat more taking a shit than those baseball players do in a whole game.

there is another video where he fronts up and explains himself, "they never get down that low during a game so they dont require training for it"

complete tossbag!

Back on topic, good luck with the vfl players, I hope they smash it next year and have everyone wondering what they did during the pre season!

I agree with this, but when you are dealing with athletes attempting to improve in their given sport, not the squat, you need to justify it better than that - especially when the big $$$ or high level competitions are involved.

I don't think it's hard to justify, either. Less stress on the knee joint, improved musculature around the knee joint which in turn will help reduce the liklihood of knee injuries (which can take a player out of an entire season).

If you've got a large sprint component then you can also go on about glute development etc.

But with athletes who don't know any better, they go to training, but up big numbers in a quarter squat, and get praised by the coach/teammates/club. How do you convince them that your method is better?

I think NRL players are the bench mark in Australian Sport for strength.

Id have to say Rugby Union mate - from what I have seen and the guys I have been around pound for pound union players are stronger...I love league and union is my game but union players work harder....pretty underrated athletes in Australia.

Saying that I have decided to put the boots back on and make a return to the rugby field next yr! - Currently cutting from 120kg to 100kg (sitting around 107-108 atm).

Keeping things really simple atm - 5 x 5 style program/ plenty of sled, prowler work, plyo work and a shit ton of core work.

Looking forward to it!
