Not long, he says

KA: I have been training for powerlifting since April 2011 with my first comp in November that year. Previously to that I was using the gym for about 3 years for to lose weight. I dropped 30kg of lard, making it down to 91kg, before I started training for strength. We all need a purpose and being a bodybuilder is just not my mind set (the flexing on stage and such). I also considered Olympic Weightlifting and Strongman, but without bouncy plates, a proper platform or any of the specialised gear I eventually settled on powerlifting.

When I get body right, I will make a bid for 93kg deadlift 50-59y record in PA, 245kg.

I did 230kg in 2011, and 3 reps on 220kg in training. Just got to my legs up again.

How long has he been lifting?

Like, how many years? is it just something he's taken-up in the last few?

He's been training specifically powerlifting for 2.5 years and 3 years general training in the gym before that, so not much experience. He's a naturally big guy, about 6 foot 3-4 and big frame.

Perfect illustration of what I love about this sport. You're never too old to pick it up and you can continue to improve for a long time if you look after yourself.
