Post op sciatic pain is normal as the nerve is still recovering and everything around is is still mildy inflamed - but it should only be intermittent mild pain, not constant. It can be made worse if you've been pushing it too hard but by no means should the pain be anything like it was before the op.

I know it'll be hard, but you really need to forget about maintaining your fitness in the short term and focus on getting back to full strength in the long term. It can unravel pretty quickly if you aren't careful and going back to square-one so soon just isn't worth it. Maybe look at it as a well deserved break...

Enjoy the time off while you can- before long you'll be back at work and wishing for a holiday HAHA!!!

Yeh I know mate.
It was sore this morning when I got up, but can't feel a thing now, which is dangerous. It is intermittent as you say, glad about that. I'd neck myself having that pain 24/7...

Mate good luck with the recovery.

What have you been told in the way training, are you ever going to be able to squat and deadlift again,ie fixed it...or will you never squat or deadlift heavy again?.

I also have a dodge L4,L5,S1, just as it all feels solid again pop!

Hey mate
What I've been told by the surgeon is a lot different to what I was told by my GP and a lot different again by a mate who's had the surgery.
Surgeon said after plenty of rest & rehab I'd be right going back to most things I was doing. He knew about the training I was doing, but was wary on heavy squats.
My GP was more along the lines of training a lot lighter, body weight stuff and a heap more swimming. He's the family GP and ever since we were kids has erred on the side of caution.
My mate had it done two years ago. Has since played super15 rugby and a full season of first grade here in Sydney.
So mate, I would be careful with squats, at to be honest, theres plenty of other leg stuff, although not as good, to do to your legs anyway!!
I'm getting my stitches out tomorrow, hopefully the GP gives me the green light for some easy swimming next week!!

imo GPs are great for runny noses and not much else. They know next to nothing about health just symptoms and how to treat them. There will be exceptions but I am yet to see one.

Exactly!! He's taken plenty of stitches out and referred me/family to the right specialists. But nothing specific. He's a lovely bloke, but very 'general' with his knowledge of anything other than the flu and other common ailments!

Ok thanks,

Hmm I am thinking I will have to rethink my sport of choice....powerlifting.....

I was also told to take up swimming or knitting by the gp... :(

Hahah. Knitting.
Yeh mate, I'll be slowly working my way back into it all. I'm actually looking forward to the swimming! Bought some new goggles and one of those waterproof MP3 players and all!!
When's the last time your back played up???

February was nasty bed for 4 days couldn't move, after 4 months started deads and squats again was going really well.

On Saturday 5th I did a deadlift comp, pb, 190kg, but have definetely aggravated it, cant take full strides, bend over, sitting in a car is almost bearable....(had to drive 9 hours on the Sunday, that was fun. Generally not painful, unless I am bending or stretching my hammy.

Gee February sounded good.
Good lifts, how was your warm up/down??
Saw my GP today, drove for the first time in a few weeks. Feels ok. I have dissolving stitches, they haven't come out yet. But he took the dressing off and replaced it. Can take it off to air tomorrow arvo.
Back at work in two weeks. Light duties (I feel like a bludger) for another two weeks unless something happens in the meantime.
Can do some water work in pool/ocean next week. Just have to be careful not to push it.

Good to hear its all coming along nicely mate. Don't worry about feeling like a bludger at work, fuck em, don't bust your nut or risk a re-injury for any workplace after an operation mate.

Thanks mate.
Yeh I know. I love my work plus am employed by the family business!! They have been cool about it, which is nice. I am definitely not busting anything for work. That's what apprentices are for! Haha

good to hear your hearing positive things from the doc, and mobiloty is increasing.

warmup was pretty good, was exercise specific, but took it pretty easy, gradually built up the weights, felt awsome on the day, or I wouldnt have had a crack at a pb, the 180 went up really well..previously i had never had an issue from deadlifts.. teh other guys said form was pretty good..who knows, will just have to take it even easier now..

Trofius do you or have you tried pulling sumo. I find it alot kinder on my lower back injuries.

Little bit of sciatic pain this morning, but only a 2/10 instead of 9/10! But I did wake up on my side, which seems to aggravate it. Plus I haven't taken my endone in two days... I wanted to see what it was like without the pain killers.
Also think I may have stretched the cut as there is fresh blood on the new wound covering....

All the best Taurus.

What advice can you give the young bloke starting out lifting?

Has that changed?

A good proper warm up and warm down.
Instead of sitting on couch watching tv at night, get down on floor for 5-10 minutes and stretch!! Just work your way up from ankles to neck and everything in between.
As I said before, 20 years of rugby and judo will give you grief, but not as much had I been anal about my stretching. Which had dropped off significantly the last year or so, when my training actually increased. Silly me

Wound opened up last night again. Seeing GP tonight at his house (have known him since I was a kid) to check it out.
The stitches haven't come out, but looks like the bottom of the cut may have needed an extra stitch....
Being right on my belt line, it keeps opening up!! Argh, quite annoying. Was looking forward to a swim tomorrow but might leave it another day..
