Born in Tripoli / Lebanon: 11/08/1965 so I’m knocking on 45’s door.
Sporting career:
Began gymnastic training at the age of about 7 or 8 in 1972.
Arrived in Australia in 1977 at the age of 12 and by the age of 14 I was a 100-200m sprinter at the state level. Couldn't speak or understand a word of english back then which helped me to concentrate on art, muscic, and sport (and math).
1980, at 15 took up Olympic weightlifting and within 3 month won the national youth and schoolboys championships.
1982 was offered a scholarship at the AIS in Canberra where I remained until mid 1984. Won the Australian junior (U21) weightlifting championships at 17and was picked to represent Australia at the 1984 World Junior Championships which were held in Italy at the time. Placed 7th in the world as an individual and came 10th as an Australian team member.
1984 left the AIS over a very immature act on my behalf and stopped weightlifting before truly realising my potential.
1984 took up the sport of bodybuilding and trained consistently for 25 ½ years going from 75kg up to 90kg at a height of 5,4” (164cm).
2009 November, stopped bodybuilding and turned back to Olympic weightlifting with the intention of breaking a clean & jerk World Master’s record in my age and weight class.
Nutrition knowledge:
In 1986 at the age of 21, I began my studies to become a health care councilor. I stopped half way through the course upon been unsatisfied with what I was being taught. It was too much of money talks and truth walks. I was a very fiery young man and would readily speak my mind (not the best communication skills sometimes). To avoid clashes with the establishment, I decided to leave. Since the age of 15, I stopped drinking anything that may remotely have caffeine in it. So no soft drinks of any kind, tea, or coffee. Have never been a supplement athlete really, possibly due to my love for and enjoyment of complete food. Supplements today have really come a long way since the late 70s and early 80s. However as Ausbb coach Markos has always said, it’s the effort that really counts when it comes to progress, and I was never short on energy so effort was part and parcel of the whole package.
I don’t really believe in diets as a first option to gain or lose muscle and fat. It’s training where I look at first and then proceed to make adjustments with food. Much rather lose fat through caloric expenditure than through caloric restriction, where energy always is sure to suffer.
Training:
A holistic approach to training is where it’s at for a bodybuilder hoping to continue on making progress. Rigidity in thinking and action always has plateauing as a close by friend. Variety and change is where it’s at even when a particular program works for you. Once a program becomes a routine, then you’d be asking for slowing of pace on all fronts. Mix it up to keep psychologically motivated and physiologically challenged to adapt to that stimulus (whatever it is).
General life / hobbies:
Married with 4 daughters. Amazingly proud dad and a very appreciative Australian citizen due to the opportunity this wonderful country offers each and everyone of us. My eldest daughter Nabila who’ll be 17 in May, has already scored in the high 90s in her HSC and is on her way to realise her dream of following in the footsteps of the late and greatest heart surgeon Australia has ever seen; doctor Victor Chang.
I’m an airplaneaholic if there is such a word. I learnt how to fly but due to family commitment had to stop before acquiring my PPL. My other hobbies well…people. Putting a smile on someone’s face is a huge achievement for me. I became an interpersonal communication specialist around 2000, but I think you either got it or you haven’t. I’m speaking of the genuine love for people here; a love that has no motive of a monetary figure attached to it. Helping for the sake of helping and nothing more. Karma is something I believe in and what goes around seems to always come back around to bite you, lift you, or otherwise.
Research and craving knowledge is of course another one of my hobbies. However knowledge acquired and kept is an absolute waste and disgrace in my opinion; hence I share with all of you what I know.
I really feel that I haven’t scratch the surface yet as far as sharing with you what I know, but all good things take time and I won’t be leaving Ausbb anytime soon I hope, unless I’m forced to do so somehow.
Occupation:
I’ve worked as a gym instructor in my younger years but lately my job had me looking after the richest man in Australia as a personal bodyguard/security. Security officer is my current job, although I’m a qualified weightlifting and power coach. No Silverback, no 7/11 for me but you were close my friend. And yes Katie my posts are done at very odd hours because as Mike has rightly said, I do work at night.
Advice:
You only get out of it what you put in it whatever it is that you aspire to. Listen to the people who have traveled the path you’re wishing to take and learn from their experiences…then share, never forget that bit. Help as much as you can because by helping, you yourself grow and become a better person for it. And last but not least is the golden rule: treat others the way you’d like to be treated and you will never be disappointed. Smile, you’d be amazed how it can change and make your attitude sore above the clouds.
I thank you for your time.
Fadi.
