Walking around with a walking stick is a little strange. Copping some weird looks...

Yep!
Back feeling ok today. I was very sore last night. I think I was standing for too long during the guitar lesson & it played up. Took a Valium last night and slept like a log. (Logs apparently sleep well)
Had two nice walks today. Back in the pool next Tuesday

good news. what is that - like 10 days til you're back in the pool? hope my wound recovers that quickly...

my operation is happening this monday (the 18th) and today was unfortunately the first day that the pain has been severe enough to keep me away from work. seriously, when i couldn't raise my arms to change my t-shirt i knew it was all over for the day.

Really, unless you have experienced such pain, words cannot do any justice to describe severe sciatica pain. Things like standing, sitting, sleeping, pissing and shitting are all fraught with fear and amplified pain. And if you sneeze, your fucked!!!!

Good to see you are are doing well, Taurus. In such circumstances, valium is a good thing :-)

Know exactly what you mean, guzzla. My instances of pain have fortunately been intense but few and far between until the last few days. This week has been terrible - find a position where it does hurt too much and stay there for as long as possible.

Oh yeah, and the sneezing thing, totally.

Really wish I could fart without feeling like my whole leg was on fire :-/

Thank mate
Saw my GP today, the wound is pretty good apparently (hard for me to see)
He said I can drive and head to the pool for walking in the water.
6 more weeks off work though! ARGHH
Im getting cabin fever at home...
But my guitar playing has come up! lol

Good news. I'm dozing in recovery - I had my opp this afternoon. Surgeon says it all went to plan and he's very happy. Hoping to be going home on Wednesday. Not looking forward to the cabin fever...

thanks kaz
I went for a little walk in the pool today, gee it felt good!! haha

Well either the rose hip tabs or the chlorella have done something.
I was told by a few people they help with wound care/healing.
My wound, which was pretty nasty as you saw in the pics, has healed better and 4-5 days quicker than last time...
I am back on to therabands, to get my glutes firing.
My left glute isnt doing much at all, so the work in the pool and theraband stuff has to be done, no matter how boring..
Basic pelvic floor exercises for stabilisation too....
Lucky my wife is an exercise physiologist, these sessions/therapy would cost me a fortune!

Is it just the external wound or general healing (including internal) those supps are helping with?
I normally would not believe they would work but it can't harm right? So it might be worth a go.

Just the wound itself, general healing will take more time, but the wound is 100% healed, clean too! As i said, a friend of ours works in wound care (she sees all sorts of madness, necrosis, infections, holes in hands etc etc) and she recommends this to all her patients. As you say, it cant do any harm, and i think its worked!

I will be referring back to this thread often over the next few months. I got my MRI results back yesterday and I have c6 (slight) - c7 (major) disc protrusion which is has resulted in massive strength loss, muscle loss, and pins and needles in my left upper body. Is there a difference between disc herniation and protrusion? It's all a bit scary at the moment. I'm only 22 lol.

hey mate
not a massive difference...
My herniation at l5s1 actually fragmented (burst) and started healing onto the spinal nerve, so, like you, ended up in all sorts of pain...
Are you having an op or just trying to minimise damage for now?

Geez mate, that sounds crazy.

Well I only got the diagnosis yesterday, so physio said I should see my GP to get a referral to see a specialist. So I guess I'll see what he suggests (and how serious he thinks it is). It's weird - now that I know there is something wrong with my discs, all of a sudden my neck and arm are in much more pain. The mind is a funny thing.

How's the recovery coming along?

Walking in pool this morning.
Theraband session this arvo.
Slow and boring, but needed

not good news. how big is the bulge?

my advice: explore all your options prior to surgery - you want to avoid it if other solutions exist, but once all other options are exhausted then accept it because it usually works. this means jumping through the hoops with your regular physio and maybe talking to someone with more experience with spinal stuff. If i had a do over i would probably have seen another physio before opting for surgery.

once you get past the physios, talk to more than 1 neurosurgeon - you want multiple opinions on the best approach. if you want recommendations for good surgeons you can ask taurus or myself as we've both been through this recently.

to help prepare you for the costs, with pretty decent private cover i was out of pocket about $5k for the surgery alone and that's not including $400 a pop to consult with the surgeons or a couple of months of physio before and after. This alone should have you exploring all non-surgical routes as thoroughly as you can.

good luck...
