Question on Fat Cells

Okay so last night I skimmed past Today Tonight but i stopped when they were talking about diet.

The lady said, "Fat cells stay with you forever, there is no way to get rid of them, the only thing you do is shrink them."

I thought that was a load of bs and they got some hackjob 'specialist' to agree to whatever the media asked.

I was just wondering whether this is true or what not?

Cheers
Stephen

True. Though they have found out that fat cells do die off and are replaced (10% per year) in a recent study. So blocking of that replacement could mean less fat cells, so look out for the drug race on that one. You can always get lipo and then you have an immediate reduction in fat cells.

i heard that that is true aswell.

i think that your fat cells increase during childhood and adolescence. also when women get pregnant they make more fat cells. thats why most of them get and stay fat after pregnancy and struggle to get back to their pre baby body.

It's been hit already, liposuction ftw!

Problem with fat kids they build a **** load of adipocytes during puberty ...

More adipocytes more aromatase, more testosterone conversion to oestradiol and high shbg.

=

The fatties get fatter...

Or we get skinnier then fight being fat with a passion the rest of our lives :)

I can put on fat so easily, I weighed 110kg when I was 16. Lost it all by 17-18 but now I'm stuck with the health problems from it. I think it was Marcos who cleared it up for me last night that an adult body can't grow fat cells unless certain circumstances i.e pregnant etc.

I watched this doco talking about genetics and today's obesity problem and they studied a group of people who ate badly but never put on weight. They put them on a controlled diet of basically a $&@$ load of calories and made them fat over a month. One of them still barley put on weight, I couldn't believe it. They went on to say that had these people been born in ancient times their survival rate would be less as their body isn't efficient at storing excess energy. Just thought that in itself was a really interesting comment true or not and it got me thinking.

Yeah i have seen that doco as well.. It relates to an old studyof prison inmates.

No one can relaly explain it. Its one of those things people just put their heads down about.

You know what sucks? Its also hard for the body to grow new muscle fibres as well. It can be done alot easier then adipocytes. However its still not the easiest thing in the world to do.

So your fat as a kid you **** your hormones, you have less muscle and more fat. Can anyone see where this leads?

I sure as hell can...

However as a child it was and it wasnt our faults. Our parents didntknow **** no one knew people were dumb and they still are about health.

But why should children have to suffer other peoples mistakes?

I wish proper health nutrition was taught in schools seriously i dont give a **** about captain cook **** him to hell. Teach me about how to leave a happy and healthy life. Algebra was a waste of ****ing time Teach kids about health!

X2 man!

Our office lady has the smartest kid. He aspires to be a pro afl player and has the skill to go with it. He mimics his life training and eating like athletes and he is only like 15. He choose health studies as on of his o.p(don't know what you NSW people call it) subjects for next year and the school cancelled the class because only eight kids wanted to do it....

I have spoken to my mother about how I was allowed to over eat and get McDonalds on demand not to guilt trip her but just to explain how it has now affected my life. As a kid who worked at McDonalds it didn't cross my mind that a supersize double quarter pounder meal with a vanilla shake was doing me damage.. Hell it was half price because I worked there!!!

See that bit about the prison study, that's pretty cool isn't it? Bunch a prisoners who haven't had a decent feed in 6 years getting to chow down and shave some time off their sentence. Lol

Yeah it was interesting...

I suppose people dont understand alot of things. Even people i speak to have trouble comprehending new medical discoveries.

Oh so autism, mental illness stems from bowel problems? My gp didnt tell me that.. yeah ok your crazy...

Not really, whats crazy is pumping people full of drugs in an attempt to make them "normal" then rejecting any evidence that it is not a localised problem.

What has that got to do with the food we eat? Everything... Intestinal health determins our health, our mood our energy. Yes there are alot of other factors but if the good things arnt getting in how are we suposed to make what we need out of nothing? Where does the serotonin come from if the body is not getting enough L-tryptophan?

It seems people havea hard time even believing that obesity and diabeties is caused from what people put in their mouths?

I think the doco's called 'why skinny people don't get fat'. I remember in the doc', there was this Asian dude he managed to loose scale weight while following a very, very big bad diet. It pretty unexpected.

What sort of comment is that? If you see a 9 year old fat kid chowing down at McD's do you shake your head at him or his parents? I completely agree with what noobs said and nutrition isn't something a child can be responsible until at least 16.

I personally take offence to that as I spent many night staying up late doing situps etc trying to loose the weight but once again didn't know how to do it? Is that my fault i didn't know about squatting and diet? All my efforts were in vein and it was something that I just couldn't turn around no matter how hard I tried. Once you fail at loosing weight its a downward spiral close to mental illness.. and it can have the potential to ruin your life or kill you. So is the answer to say "well its obvious if kids eat bad they'll get fat" or is it a plain and simple answer of drum this shit into them at school from a young age, where they HAVE to learn how food choices and exercise choices will shape their life.

Ive heard GOMAD can increase your fat cell count if your not careful?

With the aromatase thing, is it dependant on fat cell size or just the cell count?

Well I think the fat problem is because kids these days get driven eveywhere, sit on the computer all day or play the playstation all day.

I remember when I was in primary school, I would walk to school with my parents and in the afternoons dad would walk my bike up to the school and I would ride it home. I ate heaps of junk food and everyone would ask my parents if I eat because I was so skinny. After schools I would go ride my horse, Mum had me in dance classes once a week plus swimming. At schools my friends and me where always running around doing physical activities.

Now kids are just lazy..

Fat cells increase and decrease in size, that why we get fat or skinny. You are born with a certain amount of fat cells and that stays with you for life unless you get lipo. People have different amount of fat cells not everyone is the same. I think when you eat too much energy they get stored in your fat cells this is how they increase.

anyone noticed how much kids suck at sports these days...

try find a 8 - 12 yr old you can throw a ball. i dont know many. when i was that age me and school mates would throw tennis balls over the 4 storey building where school was as a game, cricket, soccer played lots of sport. now a days so many kids just plain suck at everything.. no sport ability at all. theres lots that can play but probably more that cant.

Hold on hold on, your trying to say NO ONE ever told you maccas, sweets is bad? I'm sure most schools had the food pyramid chart. I know its not perfect, but it was sensible. Now where was maccas and milk shakes on the pyramid? Where were vegies, fruits...?

Not trying to offend anyone, just voicing my opinion.
