Ptc Sydney - Whats been happenin

haha it would be good training properly but it looks scary having to do squats etc in front of a lot of people
the atmosphere in a gym thats serious, with all the people watching, drives you to lift harder and better.

Nobody judges anybody here. I have had guys who could only squat 40kg when they joined. Its about lifting in an environment where everybody is here to help and encourage u to do better.

been a while since i posted any updates.. The gyms been busy and i dont have time to even film peoples lifts anymore. Had 7 people squatting/4 deadlifting and over 5 others outside doing prowler/rope conditioning sometimes while im training up new members..

But ill make the effort to post before shots of people..

Anywayz.. interestingly today... i had a discussion with a prospective member today..

A prospective new member was in the gym today roy..
Roy mentioned how much i was charging for PT lessons as he had seen some of the other members who had put lost 7kg and in 9 weeks while seeing his strength go up.
I said i charge $700 a year for all year training programs and diets.

He said he paid for a PT to train him and it was $55/30min all this involved was some dumbbell and cardio work. I asked him how much weight he had lost and strength he gained in the last year? .. He said he lost 5kg and benched 60kg.. no squat work?

The fitness industry as a whole needs a major overhaul. I know why some trainers dont get the results for their clients by giving them a false sense of "confidence" but if somebody was paying me $55/30min i would really be trying to motivate the client more and have them think for themselves as individuals and only come to see me for any lifts/injuries that are stalling their progress..

Such is the fitness industry..

Don't forget your type of gym attracts different clients. I have a few clients who I know if I pushed them hard like I think they should train I would lose them. It sucks but I need the money so I do what I can get them to do.

I have a few really good ones who I can push and funnily enough those ones always see the results. Sadly a lot of PT's think they need to keep everyone at the moderate level and kind of give up pushing their clients or they think they are "rehab" specialists and that all their clients need "rehab" when what they really need is proper exercises and more hardwork.

That and the issue of certification. I was under the impression that you simply cant be giving dietary advice to people without being certified. The same for training them due to problems with professional indemnity.

Fitness and Finance industry are basically in the same boat IMO. They are both forced to recommend things that are 'ultra safe' to their consumers and therefore won't get full potential. This is why gyms like PTC and muscle pit in WA are in such small minority, ie very small handful of places in each state.

Plus in both industries, these are the methods you're taught at uni / tafe etc. I've a mate in Sports Science degree who was taught how to do and coach a curl but no mention of a squat.

These are the only 2 industries I'm familiar with but I'm betting every industry is in the same boat. Too much insurance fears, uneducated lecturers, bureaucratic red tape that will get worse before it gets better.

Depends on the level of advice though. I can technically give some nutrition advice due to being taught basic nutrition (the info I was taught I do not use) but this does not mean I can nor would give out diets. I just educate people on the importance of calories, macros etc in regards to body comp. I also teach them that just because it is considered "healthy" it does not mean it will make you lean or not fat. That is all people really need to make a difference though.

The one nutritionist/dietitic qualified practitioner I have been to see (with regards to professional networking) was overweight, didn't see the value in weight training and recommended like 1.3g / protein p/kg for athletes.

But yes, personal trainers/sports scientists/exercise physiologists are not supposed to provide nutritional services unless they are qualified to.

I keep it simple and basic like dave, because ultimately that's all you really need.

The diets I give out are the cookie ones u get on most forums .. I tell them to go there and read just follow it.. I could go and do a 2 day course on nutrition but would I bw reealy giving out the same advice I learnt? I hardly think so..

just wondering what price it is for a one off visit.

i want to get some work on my lifts before the upcoming comp.

Is it extra to have one of you guys critique my form and give me tips?

Cheers
Mitch
