yeah, but Gymnasts aren't really competing for long periods are they and their strength to weight ratio is more important than duration of performance.

yeah because they don't train hours a day?!

lol oh they won't have the energy without carbs! get a grip on reality guy's...

this need of carbs is all in your head

People seem to have forgotten that everyone's body reacts differently. Some people may cope without carbs far better than others for many reasons.

mate, all I was saying is that Gymnasts only perform for a minute or two then trundle off stage. So that is what they train for. The average person or the average sportsperson is performing for a longer duration than a gymnast's routine.

and a 100 metre sprinter shouldn't take much more than 10 seconds... wtf does that mean? it has nothing to do with how they achieved that performance in the first place

who needs the more carbs, the 100 metre sprinter or the marathon runner. Then theres people somewhere in between.

Now leave me alone or I'll get Baz back in here :p

Yeah but so does and Oly lifter or Powerlifter, I don't get your point, lets just put it down to a bad example......:p

Please give some examples of how many carbs these athletes are actually eating. Like has been said what is low carb. There is no one set definition.

And yes you are right of the need of carbs being in your head. The brain uses significant amounts of carbs.

I just saw a fight and had to join in :p

Nah, my perspective is not just for Powerlifting or Oly lifting or whatever. I was thinking of sportsperson's in general.

:D

The brain uses carbs yes, but can adapt to using ketones. I felt fantastic during the CBL prep which I ate nothing but protein and fat for 10 days.
I think train well without carbs, others not so much. It's about finding out what works best for you.

Yep you will get no argument from me there. The body can adapt to using ketones. But just because it can doesnt mean it's optimal.

CBL has plenty of carbs from memory doesn't it. 10 days isn't a long time to go low carb anyway.

Your brain is best served by a diet high in healthy fats.

Nah the prep phase is zero carbs.
But I'll never go zero carb again....Missing out on Ice Cream kills me

If you have to lower your calories so low that you can't include reasonable amounts of carbs and fats something is wrong.
I've previously tried cycling high carb training days and high fat rest days (leangains style), as you have suggested. I found it a lot easier (both physically and physiologically) to restrict carbs and lose body fat.

Based on the catalyst episode Shane Watson (including many other athletes) has experienced similar results so it's something people looking to reduce body fat while remaining highly active should consider.
