Who here is competing at the PA raw Nationals on Saturday the 26th of March?

The comp will be held in Hawthorn at the Weightlifting Centre.

This is the first raw Nationals that PA have held.

I'll get down there after sessions at PTC on Saturday afternoon

Anyone else going, competing, refereeing?

strong enough?
23-02-2011, 01:01 PM
I'll hopefully be having a go.

I took a long break from training/competing so I couldn't get a qualification and will need to rely on wildcard entry. It will depend on how many qualified lifters enter, but I should get in.

If I don't compete, I'll be there spotting and loading.

Should be fun, and very happy raw has been brought in. Great for the sport.

I'll come introduce myself if I get a chance PTC.

I'm competing. Qualified for the 83kg class at the Nov 2010 comp. I just need to keep my weight in check, as I'm gaining mass from all the volume I'm doing.

Wilks calls it the loser nationals :p as most who have entered so far are novices like me. I hope some of the experienced guys make up their minds and switch over to prove him wrong. From chatting to them, they like raw more than equipped anyway.

Just go and compete anyway. :)

Next year, if more people switch over to raw, the qualifying total will be raised pretty high, I reckon. If you've already qualified now, compete!

Registration ends on March 6, so be quick!

not sure if ill enter. i dont think my training has been good enough. my squat is shit.

I've been training 2 months, after a 5 month paternity layoff, and a 12 month recovery from hip/back injury before that. Your lifts will be better than mine and a number of others.

If you think you'll enjoy it, don't let your numbers or perceived inadequate preparation stop you.

Scott Hill is lifting in the 93kg raw. He's one very strong man! Got a 242.5 raw squat and 182.5 raw bench a couple months ago.

Nghiep Luu is also lifting raw at 66kg. IIRC he just did 230kg deadlift for 3x5 in training. It's still below his best but he's just getting back into it.

I'm lifting in my first comp back from injury and new-baby break from training.

There are a bit over 50 registered lifters plus another 10 bench only lifters and a guest paralympic powerlifter. Great to see the interest shown in the new-to-PA raw format, especially considering the short qualification period and the fact there's an equipped comp the next day. Shaping up to be a great day with some interesting battles in the 93s, 105s and 120s especially. Hope to see many of you there.:)

Just noticed that Matt Middleton is also in the 93kg. Will be a very interesting battle between him and Scott Hill.

One of the other 93kg guys (a Russian or EE fella with a heavy accent) is also pretty strong. I saw him train bench at Melb Uni the other week and he was repping 165kg.

And the legendary Wim is lifting in the 105!!! :D

With Nathan Baxter in the SHW.

Glad to see the strong are taking up raw.

Talc is slippery and when on a weightlifting platform you need to be sticky.

no- the rule is no talc whatsoever- if you apply talc anywhere you will be disqualified.
Its a condition that was set by the weightlifters. No talc at all in the venue (not on legs, not on the floor, not anywhere).

The no talc thing is surprising. While I understand that the venue makes the rules in this case, what would happen if footballers were told they couldnt use long stops at a venue?

They would play elsewhere.

Hope this doesnt effect some big deadlifts

Will this be a rule at other PA venues?

Doesnt really make it a level playing feild.

Having said that, the Weightlifting Centre is one of the best places to hold comps

What does the IPF rule book state on the use of talc

Does a lifter have the right to refer to the rule book?

Can records be set at this comp?

Dancelot
23-03-2011, 12:26 PM
Records can be set at this comp. A few are going to establish new Raw records (apart from Scott Hill trying to break his own). Same with the equipped comp the following day.

Does talc give you a better grip than chalk? Never heard of it till now.

NPR
23-03-2011, 12:30 PM
talc is for slip, chalk is for grip.

Generally talc is applied to the thighs so the bar slides easilly up on a deadlift. Also helps getting on suits/shirts I think.

TGM
23-03-2011, 12:30 PM
AFAIK it's not a chalk substitute. You put it on your thighs while deadlifting so there's less friction as the bar slides up your thigh. (I've never used it and I have no idea how much it helps.)

jonnie_sfw

LOL.....no mate talc is generally used on the quads to reduce friction when pulling.

23-03-2011, 12:31 PM
You will be able to set national records at this comp - you just need to have 3 national level referres judge it, which there will be at this comp.

The IPF rulebook says that "the use of oil, grease or other lubricants on the body, or personal equipment is strictly prohibited. Baby powder, resin, talc or magnesium carbonates are the only substances that may be added to the body or attire. Not the wraps."

Talc is permitted, but there is nothing in the rules to say you must be given the right to use it. If the rule said something like "the lifter can use talc on their body" they might have a case to refer to the rulebook.

it's not like chalk is banned, it's just talc which most of us don't use in training anyway.
Not having talc is really only going to make a difference on an absolute grinder of a max effort lift.

Equivalent example would be a CAPO event without a Monolift like the recent QLD comp.
In this case good venue with a talc ban is better than a bad venue with talc allowed. Good lifters will adjust to the conditions.

PTC
23-03-2011, 03:33 PM
Good point.

Although a Monolift is irrelevant in raw comps, and the QLD states had one equipped lifter, a 56kg girl, but you make a good point.

I know one equipped lifter wont be competing at States because I dont have, nor want, a Monolift.

At all CAPO Nationls, where WR can be set, there is a Monolift though.

This is a Nationals on the weekend, is it not?

strong enough?
23-03-2011, 03:57 PM
This is a Nationals, but you can only set official WRs in the IPF at international events (eg Oceania, Commonweatlh, Worlds etc). Bunch of other requirements too. That said, IPF world records are pretty hard to break and an Australian hasn't had one for a long time AFAIK...except unofficial Masters records (Wim).

PerthMac
23-03-2011, 04:12 PM
and for Raw deadlifts the lack talc shouldn't make that much difference, as most of the people within range of deadlifts are used to lifting in suits, so should have a stonger lockout than they can get off the ground to make up for the increased friction.
That's my theory anyway.

strong enough?
23-03-2011, 04:34 PM
and an Australian hasn't had one for a long time AFAIK...except unofficial Masters records (Wim).

I need to correct myself.

Wim's records are official
Max Bristow (Masters3) and Katrina Robertson (Open Women's deadlift in 90+kg class) also hold IPF world records.

But to give people an idea of what it will take for an Australian to set an IPF world record, with new World Record qualification level for the new classes: as a sub-junior (under 18) 93kg lifter you will need SQ 315, BP 220, DL 320, TL 815 just to qualify.

Was good to meet you Tudor :) I had a fantastic day - the vibe in the room, support from other lifters, and overall atmosphere was great. Finishing the day with dinner as a group is a great way to cap it all off.

Bodyweight of 91kg (and a bit), I made the following lifts:

SQ 120 pass /125 pass /130 fail (made the lift, racked prior to command)
BP 72.5 pass / 75 pass / 77.5 fail (let the bar rest of my chest, no tightness)
DL 165 pass / 170 pass / 180 pass

Got PB's in all three lifts. Many thanks to Minh for his help (and for forcing me to compete). And a big thanks to power lifter and physio, Chris Seville, for helping me out with some issues I had with my shoulder/arm after squats.

Looking forward to the novice comp in 16 weeks.

But my primary goal was to come back and compete after a long break, which I did, and I got through unscathed after spending the previous year getting over some annoying injures. And now I know what I need to work on to redeem myself next time. That's what competing is all about.

Great meeting some new faces today, TGM, Hirdy, Matt Middleton and a few others. Some great lifting and a brilliantly run event. Went like clockwork. And the live stream seemed to go well. It meant some of my family members could watch from home.

Thanks for asking, Markos. I didn't do very well today, as planned. The cutting weight really fucked with my strength, and it didn't help that I've been sick for the last few days, due to some throat bug I got from a girl :D Normally I'd just eat big and shrug it off after a day or so, but because of restricted diet for cutting weight, it just kept going and really killed my fitness.

Still, I managed to just edge out another guy (I think by 2.5 or 5kg) to get the bronze medal in the 83kg class with this 3rd deadlift attempt at 202.5kg (unofficial longest deadlift ever lol)

ChlWeMqo8vU

The 200kg 2nd attempt was similar at the start, but a bit faster up. Basically I only got the bar up to mid-shin, thought I'd quit there but somehow said fuck it I'd never give up, and kept it going. At the start, I couldn't even breathe as the throat bug meant not much air got to my chest. The support I received from people there was phenomenal. I think that's why I could fight the bar.

My total was only 452.5kg (SQ 157.5/165x/165x BP 92.5/95x/95x DL 192.5/200/202.5) but I still got PBs in bench, deadlift and total. Way lower than planned though... After the 1st squat, I knew I had nothing. Less than a week earlier, I was doing SQ 155 2x2 and bench (paused) at 92.5 2x2 easily. By the time the deadlifts came, I just wanted to lie down and sleep. Had zero energy left.

Learned so much about comp prep today though, including chewing gums and spitting in cups to make weight. :D Next comp I'll compete at whatever bodyweight I'm at during training. I can't wait for that, am pretty fired up now!

***

I have videos of a titanic battle between Matt Middleton and Scott Hill in the 93kg, and will upload them tomorrow. Best one of the day.

***

Dave Jame squatting and deadlifting were major highlights. 270 SQ and 302.5 DL, both national records. He just missed 275 SQ and 307.5 DL. He'll get a bigger squat next Raw comp. He's just not used to raw squatting yet (never squatted raw more than 240kg in training).

Nathan Baxter was quite a showman. His banters with the judges were very enjoyable. Massive man, massive bench.

Dom Cadden, a 65kg lifter who looks like a pocket sized bodybuilder, totalled over 530kg. Insane.

Nghiep Luu at 68kg opened his deadlift at 240kg, and only because of a hand injury that he couldn't lift any higher. That's him just getting back to lifting, as his best was 240kg for 3x5 in training.

Dimi won best female lifter.

Jacinta Read is a 52kg class young female lifter who was very unlucky to bomb the squat on depth (not used to squatting raw). If she had that, she would have a 2xBW squat, 1.5xBW bench and over 2.5xBW deadlift. Someone to watch in the future.

Tudor (TGM) was there for 12 hours helping with videos, spotting and loading. Great guy!

Too many other awesome lifters and things to list here, and my brain is fried now. I'll post more tomorrow. A very well run competition!

Oh yeah just remember a few more:

Amir Fazali, new lifter to PA, won the 83kg class with a 585kg total or thereabout, and a record setting/breaking deadlift of 262.5kg. I think he squatted 200kg too. Very strong guy. I think he runs Adonis Athletes, a strength gym in Sydney.

A very young fella, 16 year old 60kg class lifter, did superbly well. I think he got a 175 or 180kg deadlift, either at or close to 3xBW. Squatted 140+ too, from memory.

Well done Dancer, you improved, just keep improving

Great work Dimi, good on her, thats a great result

Johnathon has cut from 82kg to 74.5kg, took around 3 weeks. He did 3 hours in the Sauna this morning.

I hope it hasnt affected his lifting too much, although he was 77kg by the time he left the weigh in. He should be 80kg at least in the morning.

He totalled 450kg at ProRawOne in the 80kg class, lets see if he has improved as much as you.

I think he shouldve lifted in the 82.5kg class, but he needs 500kg to qualify for Raw Nats @ 75kg, tough ask for a rookie

The deadlifts went sa follows

Scott open 255 sumo style 3 whites
Matt open 265 conv style 3 whites
Scott 265 sumo grip fail (argg)
Matt 280 got it up but did not lock out knees 2 reds
Scott 265 conv (first tiem in 2 years - thought what the hell) EASY!! 3 whites no grip issues (back to conventional and over 600lb boooyaaa)
Matt 280 got to mid thigh but failed, awesoem attempt!!

Final tally -

Matt 255/170/265 = 690 1st
Scott 247.5/170/265 = 682.5 2nd

was a funny day, bench usually my strenth and was confident of going 180+ kg but was a poor day for me, Matt usually kills deads and he had a poor day there, so you can never really tell how it will pan out on the day!

Lifted with wraps and belt. Tore a peice of flesh off my thumb so my hook grip sucked.
Went:
SQ 300, 317.5, 325- 325 felt the easiest. Plenty left in the tank.
B 200/217.5/222.5- nothing special, but had some left in the tank
DL 270, 290miss (grip), 300miss (grip)

817.5kg total  That's pretty good for a a tuning-up session!

Shaune Howlett will go over 800kg next comp

Baxter is just a barbarian. Personally, I find lifting out myself helps me lock my shoulders and back in and engage. Many of the Finnish lifters lift out themselves, even in a bench shirt- and the Finns have taken out SHW world bench title for the last 5 years in a row.

Another thing to keep in mind whilst I do 50 billion reps tonight. Sheiko is good for getting the movement pattern down.

I'm not going to try to emulate this just yet, but I was amazed at the arch some of the lifters were able to get.

I had to do a double take when, I think it was Jacinta, set up her bench. I don't remember exactly but I think she got 70kg at a BW of next to nothing on her third attempt.
