Work out frequency - what dictates it?

There was a study that showed elite powerlifters increased their lifts more training 6x a week than 3x a week with the exact same volume and percentages. Just split in two

I was interested in how the body adapts during puberty or just after to the tasks that are thrown at it as a matter of survival, as it seems a time when the body is very adaptable to change. Not necessarily a bunch of roidraging bozos training at Westside or similar locality.

My understanding of it is that as a beginner, it doesn't take much work to stimulate progress, be it in terms of strength, size, or some other measure. You pretty much just have to look at a barbell and bam! There's 10lb of new lean body mass. Since progress is stimulated with relatively little work, a high amount of volume isn't needed, thus recovery needs are low and you can do everything more often. As you progress further, it takes more than just showing up and going through the motions to spur on new developments. The volume required by a lot of intermediate and advanced lifters to make even a little bit of progress is often so great that it takes longer to recover from.

This makes the most sense to me, also Dorian Yates said something to this effect in blood and guts 'you can exercise at say low intensity to keep your muscle mass, but to get new mass you need to really flog it' - something like that, not an exact quote.

I just wish I could find a study / more people to back this up. It's more or less how my training has developed, and I add another set every 2-3 months. I looked at some of the logs on AusBB which have a long history + lots of progression and at the beginning they were doing a few sets, now some of them do 8+ sets + assistance. Same thing - as they got stronger, they added more volume.
