Why do tricep kickbacks get so much hate?

Seeing as the tricep crosses over the shoulder....

I think the French press is probably the most underrated tricep exercise.

I also believe that pressing is a good tricep exercise.

Placing the upper arm beside your ears, pre-stretches the tricep, for a much better result, than having you arm placed along side the torso.
Doing the conventional tricep pushdowns would be better if you could position your arm behind the torso and using a rope, instead of a bar.

All the other variations are just waste of time.

I agree the French press hits my triceps like nothing else
 
I thinks it a great exercise to use as an assistance to help increase you're pressing numbers.

I have never seen another trainee/trainer doing it at the local gyms

I get stairs and weird looks when I explain it to guys, "oh you mean a db pullover? *face palm*
