By the end of Recruit Course, most recruits destined for the infantry, artillery etc are able to achieve 9-11 on the beep test, 100 pushups, 100 situps, 8-12 heaves, 5km run in under 20'00".
Those actually on the infantry course following that will do the same, plus run 2.4km in under 10'30", then the next day carry another guy their own weight 150m, march/run 15km with 35kg gear in under 2hr, then a section (6-10 men) stretcher carries the biggest guy in the section 1.5km, followed by weapons drill (pull apart and put back together your rifle, run through load/action/instant/unload safely), and then run through an obstacle course - and do all this without a meal for the last 12 hours and on 2-4 hours' sleep, on a 35 degree day.
Soldiers destined to be clerks, drivers, medics and so on achieve lower standards, but then why not, how would being able to do 100 situps help a driver?
As with any job, if all you can manage is the minimum, you will have a very, very hard time on that job. As anyone who'd done that job would know - as opposed to some dickhead in a pub making use of the one time in his life when he'll actually have to do bicep curls.
The article about the undisciplined and incompetent US Army being run by bureaucratic morons is not relevant to the ADF.
