For the row to be done properly the hands need to be past mid-line with the torso on contraction, (You can't achieve this with a barbell) so you are able to squeeze the shoulder blades together and I mean really squeeze, not much is happening at the lats in the row, you wont get much lat pump here.
*Grip width on a barbell will not make a significant difference on a barbell or to the exercise, just past shoulder width is the most effective.
If you are using the biceps, your not doing it right.
