Stronglifts - A few concerns

Rubber coated, but try and find ones that are actually 450mm, and avoid buying ABC because their service sucks and the collar openings are too big

Bumpers = waste of cash unless doing oly lifts.

Bumpers are too thick, not as durable and expensive.
depends on quality, like all plates the better quality the thinner they get, worked out you can fit 7 20kg bumpers a side and still fit eleiko WL collars, so 305kg all up, that is heaps for a home gym.

like 99.99% of things it will come down to personal preference id always go bumpers over plates for a home gym, easier to pick up, no rubber mats needed, im assuming they wont make a mess of the concrete in the garage if you dont have something covering it, my mum and step dad put carpet over the garage floor so i cant actually see.

I gone to getting ivanko calibrated plates now. About the same price as bumper plates and thin. It makes my texas bar feel even better when squatting or benching, less whip, and can fit more plates on the bar with rack pulls.

If your after good home gym stuff look for cheap hammertone or maybe rubber coated plates but most rubber coated are too thick too.

Basically just don't waste money on bumpers unless doing oly lifts.

Thin bumpers are expensive as hell. Why pay more for bumpers when you don't even Olympic lift.

305kg I'm not even strong and almost deadlift that already and can rack pull and power shrug way over that. What if you want an odd weight were you need, 2.5s, 5s and 10s to make up the weight you can fit much less on.

see Ivanko are discontinuing their chrome PL plate line? :(

makes me sad

Leoko ftw from now on

I didn't get the chrome ones anyway, they were too expensive. The colored ones cost me about the same as my bumper plates. Wish I had just got ivankos from the start.

true, eleiko bumpers v pl plates are about 2.5 times more expensive or some shit

eleiko 5s 2.5s etc would be less than 15mm thick getting thinner as they get lighter, as for sizes pretty sure the 15's and 20s are the same thickness maybe a slight difference, 10s being a little thinner than 15s. so you could still get close.

if you can, why wouldnt you haha

Posh. Every second plate chrome looks pretty cool plus the 50s are awesome :p

I have to query why you got 10s and 15s in bumpers, unless you start your warm ups with 40kg lol.

15s in general are a bit of a waste anyway.
I leave my 15 bumpers on the bar i use for deadlifting, but only because they won't fit on my rack plate storage :p

when you need to you can sub in a few pl plates,

take off 1 20 each side, put on 2 25 pl plates, 365kg

So not only have you got 14 x 20kg bumpers then had to also get another 4 x 25kg Plates. Then when you load the bar up the plates are trying to burst of the end.

He is a tip. Fuck the bumpers off and get PL plates from the start. The other benefit I found is when heavy squatting or rack pulls you don't have plates way out to the end of the sleeves, less flex is much nicer when squatting and easier on the bar with rack pulls.

Hunted around for prices on the IPF approved plates.

In the US, Ivanko 25s are $175ea (from Ivanko website), Eleiko $205 (from Titan) and Leoko $199 (Atomic athlete).

So if you were in America no contest as to what you would get.

Ivanko has the advantage of being an American brand so less mark up than what you would find on the Leoko and Eleiko.
Leoko 25kg plate from the Metal site (in Finland) are 109 Euro or $135AU (their 50s are $216AU *jizz pants*)
Eleiko website doesn't have prices so idk. on the US titan site Ivankos 25s are about $60 cheaper than the Eleiko equivalent so make of it what you will

i dont do rack pulls, and i wont max out on squats at home alone without a spot.

why is that every time i say i prefer bumpers for a home gym you come out of nowhere and we have the exact same argument over and over?

Get the bumpers for floor work, there is less jarring and it's much kinder on the floor and the body.

I like metal plates with a rim on them for non floor work as they are easier to load up onto the bar and make a nice sound clanging together when repping. It takes too much grip strength and wasted energy to load bumpers onto a squat bar.

Amen to that.

My favourite style of plate is the York(?) 'standard'

though unfortunately they seem to come only in lbs, closest i've found in kg is the Ivanko OM series
