Squats in the smith machine

I can't ever remember in my life using a smith machine. Was always advised against it by my trainer.

My "trainer" tried to get me to use it. I asked him about the rack and he again tried to get me to use the smith. I haven't been back since.

When setting up for the smith you need to set yourself up as you would on a leg_press with your feet well forward of you body.

If you are pushing any weight close to or above bodyweight and working to fatigue you are taking a huge risk.

you could probably do a similar job on a leg press, but it's not the end of the world, just don't go heavy.

the guy in question is leaning back on the bar to target the quads with feet forward (probably)... no big deal
 
Bench in smith machine = need new shoulder joints. Only takes a few sessions of heavy benching.

tried incline bench on the smith tonight. hated it. my shoulders hated it more. i like smith machine for lunges, shrugs, deadlifts (if it goes below knee height like a rack deadlift...don't laugh) sometimes shoulder press and upright rows.
 
Wow plenty of thoughts on this , i do use it for doing shrugs only if there is no bar / rack and have used it for close grip bench for tris but other than that i dont use it myself . I have not tried rows on it .
 
I have to admit I do use it for seated shoulder press if I'm by my self . I don't feel safe using the bb with no spotter

Oh and standing calf raise with a step
 
How does a shoulder injury change the mechanics of the lower body?

It doesn't in the lower body..

I was more referring to the technique side - i.e Unable to keep upperbody tight and stabalizing the bar.

Torn shoulders = unbalanced bar
With smith machines u wouldnt have much of this problem. U can pretty much squat without hands on that thing
 
Ive seen a Smith machine that moves on both x and y axis... so forward/backwards and up and down. A guy bought it for his house... I actually didn't know what to say. Although at least it moves on all planes of motion.

Personally for me I have no need for one nor would I use it for anyone training at PTC but that doesn't mean it doesn't have it's place, somewhere, for something.
 
all you need to do is aks yourself 'why would i force an unnatural movement when i can use free weights?'

dan... i think a smith machine would make a nice clothes rack...
