I have recently seen this being done and was wondering if it's a good practice ? I know a bloke that was doing it and he said it felt weird and the weight hurt his traps ??? I'm assuming he did not have it sitting correctly . Anyone here use the smith ?
Smith machine squats aren't as terrible for you as a lot of people in the strength community make them out to be, but if you have a squat rack available, I wouldn't be quick to recommend ditching the rack in favour of the machine.
I thought this was the responce i would get , i myself have not tried it and prob wont . Its funny i just got home and saw another bloke doing it and we ofered him the rack as we were done and he was na this is fine , it was more like he was leaning back and pushing , didnt look good .
If your a noob and scared cause your working out alone it has it's place for benching and shoulder pressing but for squatting I think it should be avoided like the plague. Even for noobs their better off benching and pressing with db's but I understand the appeal of the smith.
I use the smith machine for a bit of stuff especially when i don't have a spot, but squating is not one I would use the smith machine for......not to say its bad just wouldn't use it for squats

I dunno mate it looks fucking unnatural when you see em squatting in it. Don't get me wrong I'm no fan of the smith machine. Just saying the noobs are gonna use it and I can see how it appeals to em cause their shitting about getting squashed by a barbell.
