Not doing bench press

The reason the oh press is a far more effective exercise than the bench press is because you are not supported, just like an arena, cage, ring, court, field.

I do recommend you do a little benching though, eliminating every weakness is key. Once a fortnight is plenty.

If you truly want explosive power, push press and jerks are best.

If I had my time over I would have bought a log bar.

I would recommend dumbbells over a barbel for pressing.
Want to get funky? Press one, that's where it's at.

Im starting to enjoy OH press more than benching as i am starting to press more weight. Reason for this simply being when i bench it hurts my shoulders, like its putting too much stress on them.

Maybe a good reason to stop it, at least for a little while. That or look into what is causing the pain, maybe it is your arm placement, set up etc.

Usually this is a technical issue. If you can learn to use your lats when you bench, this takes the stress off the shoulders.

Push your shoulder blades into the bench with a high chest to make the bar go up, don't press the bar up.

Use of an arch, grip width, elbow position and where you touch all influence how much stress your shoulders get.

Personally I find OH press hurts my shoulders more.

Poor advice.

Thats simply to bench more weight. Did you read his original post?

Powerlifting is not about exercising, its about shifting more weight, so we shorten the range of motion. This is the opposite to creating a better athlete.

Wide stance low bar parallel squats are innefective compared to Oly squats for athleticism. Wide grip arched benching is poor compared to push press.

He's a boxer, shifting maximum weight over the shortest range is not going to help.

Single DB overhead press is my all time favourite lift, as long as its done strict.

I was only responding to BigJim.

And I wasn't necessarily advocating wide grip arched benching. Even with a flat, narrower grip style bench, you can still anchor shoulders and keep the chest high.

Ohp and bench , are good movements to complete as a boxer.

The difference at my gym is guys who fight, genrally move a slightly lighter weight faster, than the guys who wana be big/get bigger.

Any movement that will make you stronger will make you better.

Just like anything, if you want to get stronger, faster, and punch harder do the movent MORE.

PUNCH A HEAVY BAG.

Obviously the stronger you get witout giving away too much speed and reaction time the stronger your punch will be.

heavy bag=power

floor-ceiling ball=speed / reaction time

speed bag= makes you look good, ha ha

If i had to choose ohp or bench id choose ohp to improve boxing.

Why? your core is supporting the movement witch in turn will help in boxing more than chesticles .

A good explosive push press would be better again

One arm db bench.

Standing cable horizontal press with your boxing stance could work.

Also push ups. And plenty of chins

Last few weeks I've ditched the bb bench press and just done them with dbs. It's definitely hitting my pecs better this way. I'm lovin' it.

BTW, I've been totally enthralled by the interaction between Ceffo and BlBarclay! These guys are just on a totally different level to the rest of you clowns.

Very abstract, I'm sure there is something in their posts for all of us.

Any movement that will make you stronger will make you better.

I have to disagree with this one, my weight has stayed about the same by
doing sets of 5 or less and my strength has steadily increased over the
past couple of years. In fact my weight has doped this morning I was 66.5kgs.

Im now changing my training for a wile to make myself bigger.

Im not to sure what it is you disagree with totalstrength?

I beleive any movement ie(bench dead squat) that makes you stronger will make you a better compititor in any sport?

And for me (whats worked for me and my guys) the only part of training you need to change to get bigger is the training you do in the kitchen.
