Deadlift jack diy or alternative

I have everything I need now except space :(
That's why I was after a non costing alternative cos I wouldn't fork out money for something as trivial as a deadlift jack
I tried the plate thing, didn't work too bad except I kept rolling the bar onto and over the plate lol
