[Article] Bodybuilding Exercise : Exercises for Back

just wondering, how much does the deadlift actually work the upper/middle back?

I always had the notion that it pretty much only works the lower back..

I have said this a million times but hey, make it million and one.

Deadlift is NOT a 'Back exercise' Deadlift is a DEADLIFT. Its a multi-joint movement that requires a stupid amount of bio-mechanic and neuro-muscular motor control.

If your Deadlifting 'For muscle X' then your doomed to a life time of rubbish puling and the inability to get laid. Remember, chicks are hot for big Deadlifts.

Agreed, I usually like to keep my back workout separate to my deadlift day.
After deads you should be totally drained of energy (at least, I am). They're a full-body exercise.

It would depend on how you structure your training.

If you were to do a M/W/F-Leg/Push/Pull then you could very well do deadlifts to start with on the Friday followed by accessory back work.

A lot of powerlifting splits follow this formula
Squats+ assistance, Bench + assistance, Deads + assistance
