[MartialArts] What style would you recommend

Anything with full contact

Have you ever done full contact martial arts?

I have I prefer non-contact because you can do it for as long as you live where as full contact practitioners last as long as they manage to avoid injury.

Yes I train muay thai. We do full contact, in sparring you have shin pads, gloves, mouth guard and groin protection which limits injury though you'll always come out with a load of bruises. After a while your body adapts and you can take more though you are correct an injury will make things harder, though this is not different to any other physical activity just more likely to happen hitting someone with force.

I should rephrase, I'm not saying non-contact martial arts are bad at all, far from it - it depends on your reason for doing it. If you want to learn self-defense or how to fight then non or low-contact is mostly useless. If however you do it for enjoyment/fitness/flexibility/social/etc then any art you enjoy is great.

I want to do it for enjoyment and as a long term hobby. Im going to get huge (with muscle) for self defence. Thats my plan anyway.

Nothing beats sparring. There is no use learning sequences of moves and never using them with someone else. I used to spar all the time with my brother. I haven't done any martial arts and he has years of Wing Tsun, Muay Thai and Tae Kwon Do under his belt.

You will be pretty useless in a fight if you never spar imo.

You will be disadvantaged against someone who knows how to fight but against some drunk jerk or a drugged out hippy trying to mug you being huge would work fine. Thats my opinion. Most people that know how to fight dont tend to go around picking fights its the deros that do most of that.

ha ha definitely. I don't care what people say about 'leveraging' - strength, size and weight make a huge difference, though can also cause flexibility and speed issues.

I'm actually a pacifist myself, I train because I like to fight in the ring but on the street I prefer to run away :p

I can see what you are saying. Personally I think being huge does not mean alot in a fight. I have known and seen many big guys that would be absolutely hopless in a fight.

Reflex is one thing that will certainly help you against any opponent. If you are too slow or don't know what to do you will be in trouble. Sparring regulary helps keep your instinct and reflexes quick.

Kindred is very right, only wankers walk around trying to fight. They are usually the guys that don't have much but think they do. I grew up around heaps of those dudes. The guys that know how to handle themselves don't have anything to prove.

Getting back on topic. I think Muay Thai is a very good "style". It is one of the most effective at putting someone on their ass QUICK IMO. It is quite savage and brutal, I love it.

Se if you can find a club or instructer that teaches several styles.

My first club was zen do kai Karate, the club also had a big muay Thai influence, and many nights there would be karate for 1.5 hours and then another 1.5 hours of thai.

We also did night were we focused on different stuff
boxing nights,
leg night
thai
jujitsu
weapons,
fitness nights
sparing nights
night club nights, Ie close up nasty stuff, heads, knees, elbows, grapling etc, we would literally spare with other members all pushing and crowding you in!,
we would have regular visits to other styles clubs, and guests fom ex military, sas etc

A few years later, i did hwa rang tae kwon do, moslty for fitness, flexability and fun.

really need to go back...

I would go along and audition heaps of clubs before I joined one.

The only thing I have against karate (and I know not all styles do this) is when they chamber their punches at the waist and leaving the head entirely unprotected...is there a purpose to this?

Same reason boxers dont defend their legs.

Same reason boxers dont defend their legs.

boxers don't train to defend legs because they're not targeted in the sport - whereas in karate they do target the head, well last I heard they do anyway

This is why I think alot of styles can be a bit useless in the real world. You need to learn how to box well and go hand to hand to be proficient at self defence/fighting. Guarding your head (you most vital part) is paramount.

Yeah, but when in a fight with another bloke a blow to the head could kill. Keeping your guard up is paramount. As for getting hit in the nuts, from a very early age guys learn how to bring a leg up to protect their most cherished part. It is alot easier to guard your nuts than to guard you head.

I think that part about going for the nuts is a bit of a cop out. Most guys are pretty good at guarding their balls, you learn after getting hit there a couple of times. I think more of a point should be made about the throat and pressure points. In saying that, the groin is a very effective area and can put someone down.

ha ha yes but guarding the groin is actually fairly easy (and instinctive to males), also it's a much smaller (unless your a porn star :p) area to target than your head. Lastly a hit to the groin can't kill you.

Edit: josh beat me to it

They dont in sparring. This include most full contact schools. Some schools aim for the head but mostly they dont.

Apart from being a sport I think that is not so great for the "real world". That is why I love Wing Tsun, those chain punches to the head are awesome!

I have seen the head targeted in Karate with kicks.

Yep, or step into the kick, hence the need for boxing skills if you want to be able to defend yourself well.

Look at Bruce Lee, he loved Western Style boxing.
