Tearing Biceps Whilst Squatting

For many years I have struggled to get underneath a squat bar! I know there are many lifters out there that out muscle and out weigh me by a great deal, who do not have this problem. So I'm thinking that I have just a weird structure which doesn't allow me to get my arms back. Even at 100kg bodyweight, I used to partially tear the biceps everytime I squeezed myself under a squat bar. I stretch alot in preparation to squat, which is very painful for me also. During competitions I have been able to squeeze myself under the bar, continue on to the bench and dead with no trouble, but come the next day I can't pick up a cup, and the bruising starts. The biceps remain in absolute agony for 2 - 3 weeks afterwards.

For the past 2 years I have put on a fair bit more weight, and it has become almost impossible to get under the bar and into position. I have had a couple of bars modified so that the hand space is 60 inches. This has eliminated all of my issues.

Im competing in 24 days, so I have to start getting used to a normal size bar which will be used at the comp. 2 nights ago I forced myself under a normal length bar for the first time in a couple of years, it was the most trouble i have ever had trying to get under a bar. It effected the weight I could handle but not by much, im sure it wont make a difference on the day. The next day (yesterday) I couldn't pick up a box of nappies. I've iced both biceps, that night and yesterday, there is a slight improvement today but will not be able to train for the rest of the week at least.

The question I have for any one who I havent bored to death already, is that - should I continue to use my custom bar leading up to the comp, then just force myself under the competition bar on the day, and hope that it doesnt put me out of the bench and dead, or should I just continue to squeeze under the normal length bar in training and hope I dont put myself out of the comp all together.

Wayne,
CAPO and most other organisations outside of IPF allow use of a specialised squat bar like Texas squat or Mastodon.
These are 57" between the collars, compared to roughly 51.5 for a standard power bar. The extra width might be enough to avoid problems for you and other bigger lifters
Not sure if PTC has one, but possibly he could borrow one of these bars from one of the Melbourne gyms for the comp.
The other difference apart from width is they are normally thicker at 30mm with less flex and more knurling across the bar

Thanks fella's! I think i will use the custom bar in training, and hope that it's possible for a Texas or Mastodon bar with a 57" hand spacing to be used on the day.

Thats really promising for me, i've had serious doubts in the last couple of days about my future in the sport.

Thanks again fella's.

I know what you are saying Wayne- its probably due to the size and density of your pecs and delts. I have found stretching the pecs every night helped- it might be worth a try.

Wayne can you post some of your training vids on the site if you wouldn't mind.

The squat and bench vids you posted on facebook over the last few days were insane. Particularly the 180x20

Cheers,

Nick.

If you guys arent already getting sick of them on facebook, i'll try and learn how to post them up on this forum from now on..

Just got back from ABC, your bar is on the way Wayne, custom made for you, I used the WPC standards for the bar dimensions, 57" between collars instead of 52", no longer than 2400mm, no heavier than 25kg

Thank you so much mate, a competitor would be laughed at by officials from other feds, for similar requests, even if it were within their rules!

CAPO and ProRaw are in great hands, and I believe competitors have a lot to look forward to with the sport moving forward.

This is an on going problem for me too mate....heavy low bar squats usually means I can't lift my arms for when I bench I'm in so much pain..

Stretching pre, during and post workout has seems to delay this prob from reoccurring at the same severity for me

Well if you fuckers (sorry Shrek) werent so big and lifted lighter weights, you wouldnt have this problem
