Dunno about using a block for front squats though. Weight is already forward. Anyhow nice and deep.

If they didn't use a block the weight would be a lot more than just forward...it would be on the floor. The block is used to compensate for ankle inflexibility Adrian, otherwise the bar would most definitely kiss the platform...more so because of the way they're holding it as opposed to the weightlifting way, which would allow for much more stability, support, and more mechanical advantage from stabiliser as well as secondary muscles should their involvement be called upon/increased due to some loss of form.
 
I remember Dave explaining at length (on his site) why he used blocks, it allowed his torso to remain more upright so to speak.
