My breakfast (fyi)

I experimented with my diet for about a year by reading a whole lot of articles and talking to a nutritionist. The breakfast I created even surprised the nutritionist. I found it works well for me and keeps me going all morning.
Best part for me is, I drink the whole thing! I really don't like eating in the morning. I'd rather drink my breakfast.
This, well I suppose you can call it a shake, 3/4 fills my glass 2 litre beer stein (and the shake is the only liquid it's used for. I stopped drinking alcohol 5 years ago).

  • 1 whole free range or barn laid egg
  • about 400 mls of skim milk
  • 3/4 cup egg whites (works out to be around 6 to 8 eggs worth)
  • 1 cup frozen mixed berries
  • 1 tablespoon psyllium husks (to absorb cholesterol. Mine is quite high)
  • 1 banana
Put it all in a blender and turn it into a purple tasty jug of get up and go!

I then down 2 fish oil caps with a Berocca. Incidentally, those two constitute my supplement kit.
If you're like me and don't enjoy eating solid food first thing in the morning, then why not chuck it all into a blender instead!

Whats the consistency of the shake like with the psyllium husks?

Also by taking fibre in the morning (depending on how much of course) is that it effects nutrient absorbtion which is why it is advised you take your fibre supplement right before bed... (my nutrition lecturer told me that though I would definatly do more research into it as she advocates soy. . .)

How does it taste lol? I have never tried drinking eggs loll

Hi Daniel.

If you leave the shake standing for a long time, then it will start to firm up, but because my shake is so big, it doesn't get the chance to solidify. I drink it long before it has that chance.
Sometimes I'm logged on doing work from home while drinking the shake over the space of about 15 minutes, and it's still liquid.
My nutritionist advised me to add Psyllium Husks to my morning shake. I never thought about consuming it prior to consulting her. She said it will help with my cholesterol battle.

The taste, in my opinion, is great. It's thick enough to give it a proper shake-like texture, and the berries and banana flavours blend together well. There's more of a banana taste than berries. I can't taste the eggs or husks. The fruit overpowers them.

I might give it a shot without the psyhillium husks...

How much of the husks are you taking out of curiosity?

Cheers

If you are having cholesterol problems look into imporving your liver function as there may be a problem there...

The husks will help with reabsorbtion but it has to be metabolised first...

My nutritionist told me to use 1 tablespoon a day. I'm not sure what that equates to in grams.

You can get it from most supermarkets, and I would imagine, from most health food shops too. Last one I bought was from Coles for $10 but that was a brand name. The Woolworths Select brand is cheaper, I think.

My liver function results are always off the scale. I've had this problem and the high good cholesterol issue for about 10 years, back when I started getting tested on a regular basis. I've had every test you can think of and been to specialists, but they cannot find a definite reason for the results.
My GP said the elevated liver function could be causing the high cholesterol, or it could be the other way around. I'm on medication to lower the cholesterol and work my ass off in the gym, but the numbers only dropped by less than 1 full point. He suggested that maybe it's genetic.

A recent tuning of my diet was the last thing we hadn't tried yet. I go for a test next month, so I'll know if the updated diet has made any difference.

If the drugs Arnt working get off them now.

Statins lower cholesterol yes , they also lower coq10! This is what protects your heart..

How high is your cholesterol exActly.. The level isn't so much important it's the oxidation of LDL that is the problem...
Make sure you consume Alot of fat soluble antioxidants.

Also look into supplementing with milk thistle as it has been show to stimulate liver cell repair and is hepatoprotective.

Have you had any infections, glandular fever, alcohol use that could be causing this?

Have you had your hormones checked? Sometimes cholesterol is in creased when hormones are low as it's the raw material pregenelone is made from.

The overall reading was 7.1. I don't have the print-out with me which shows the breakdown of LDL, HDL, triglycerides, etc.

I did try a course of Milk Thistle but it didn't help. Maybe I should keep taking it for a longer period. I was recently thinking that the single course may have not been enough. I need to research this more.

I have had glandular fever when I was a teenager, the measles twice, mumps, all the usual illnesses from youth.

I had my Testosterone levels checked last year just for curiosity, and the doc said they were normal.

I could just be a mutant. It would explain my tentacles and the space ship in my back yard. :)

I forgot to mention that my nutritionist pointed out I was consuming too much protein. She said my diet was very good protein wise so she recommended I cut out my pre and post whey shakes for a while to see if that is a contributing factor. I replaced the shake with a serve of tuna pre work out and 400mls of chocolate skim milk post work out.

I must confess, I do feel more energised and I am growing better than ever, so the whey probably won't be making a come back into my diet.

It could be alot of things..

Do you have any gut issues? Bloating... Discomfort.

7 isnt totally bad im about 6.5 on cholesterol ldl is fine HDL is way over so apparently it looks evil.

DId you see your break down? Glandular fever is not the best for the liver the more peoplei speak to with problems the more i realise that it occured after they had it.

Inregards for testosterone normal could mean your 8.1 on a scale of 8-32. Doesnt really tell us much. It is worth getting testosterone and e2 tested.

e2 oestradiol is a form of oestrogen but the more potent form of the 3. If you bodyis having problems metabolising and excreting excess cholesterol it may have problems with toxins, hormones and other things...

If you have the $$ i reccomed this..

PathLabIM.com.au - PathLab Integrative Medicine

It gives you more infomation then a simple liver function test.

The liver test they wont know about you order it yourself...

THe testosterone and e2 on the other hand should be fine.. Throw cortisol in there to check for inflamation and it will give a better indication.

Always get printout os your blood test and keep them on file at home for future reference.. (plus its interesting ;) )
