Lower Back

Hey guys,

I don't know what I have done, however I have pain in my lower back It's mainly in the centre and when I bend over to reach for something, it feels like its in my spine and slightly to the right of it. It's fine when I stand and move around, but when I sit, be it on the sofa or in the car, and even to bend over and pick something up, it's painful (not unbearable) but mainly very uncomfortable. I must have done it when doing deadlifts and a few days later I went to squat and it was painful doing 60 kg so I stopped. I haven't trained since Sunday.

I went to the doctor and she gave me some anti inflammotary which doesn't seem to work. She told me to train only if I'm lying on my back or on my stomach. The doctor was like 70 years old and it was like a revolving door, as quick as I was in to see her, I was out just as quick. It's a medical centre I go to as there are hardly any personal doctors anymore.

I use dencorub and I do some stretching, it's fine for a little while then it gets sore again.I wanted to take this week off then next week go back to the gym and do light stuff for the lower back and abs and plenty of stretching. Even squat with just the bar for reps.

I was looking for advice on training or should I do something else?

Thanks in advance.

Does extending your back make it feel better/worse/same?

Very hard to say anything other than see someone to assess you, back pain is common and usually has a good prognosis. Don't stay in bed/stop doing normal activity.

I am not a doctor etc, take advice at own risk

Did the same thing a few weeks ago and it's still sore, same spot as yours. Mine was definitely dead lifting with too much weight. I actually spoke to a lady at work who used to work as an osteopath. She recommended getting a massage. Thinks I might of strained the ligaments in my back. If that doesn't work I might have to get a scan to see what I've done.

I agree with jungman. Go see a physio. I had something very similar to you and they said they thought it was a spinal injury that eventually healed but left residual muscle damage around the spine. I was laid up for a while and bending to tie my shoe laces or having to sit upright at a restaurant was sucky. I haven't been able to lift much of anything since the end of march. With daily stretching and strengthening exercises I've now started doing bodyweight stuff again and I'm off the pain meds.

If you are on anti imflammatories lay off the decon rub as it counteracts what the drugs will do...

Try pain away cream or physiocream but get to a physio or another doc!

Best not to do any online diagnosis - see a physio if it's really bothering you - I wouldn't be training until you see what the issue is.

Or see another doctor!!
Sounds like sacre Eliac (spelling?) joint. A good Chiro or osteo would be an option too.
My sciatic pain which led to surgery started off with minor back pain, get it sorted ASAP mate

sacroilliac.

i thought the same thing too. I would start by visiting a physio, preferably one with experience with SI joint issues. most probably they will have you working on flexibility (ITB, hip flexors, glutes, quads) and if you're lucky that will help relieve pain and restore stability until the inflammation subsides.

Taurus, can you tell me a bit about your injury, rehab, surgery, etc? I'm currently in a similar position - SI joint dysfunction, sciatica in my left leg (severe in the morning, easing as the day progresses). no acute pain at the moment and i'm totally functional, but every time i push my limits squatting or deadlifting i invariably get some pain and am forced to take a week off (has happened 2-3 times in the last year).

it seems the anti inflammotary isn't working too well so i'm going to a different doctor this afternoon. last night i was having a feel of my lumbar area and to the right of my spine i felt a lump which wasnt there before obviously so i'm a bit worried now. still hurts when sitting for long periods and bending down to pick something up. i'm hoping its something that can be put back in place without too much trouble.

Where's the pain when sitting? In the back or bum and down the leg?
Could be sciatic pain if so.
You're doctor will be able to tell you more, the see a good Chiro

Taurus I hurt my back a while ago, not sure what it was but I was in bed for a week. Fixed with stretches + rest. Probably caused by too a high deadlifting frequency and slightly bad form. Did you have any injuries like this (relatively minor comp with your others) before hurting yourself badly?

I'm not sure whether to take the risk and do deadlifts again.

I'm gonna weigh in here. I got a long term back injury care of work coupla savage protrusions L4/5 s1 disc. Best thing if your keen to work back into deadlifts is start with light stiff legs and very slowly work up. It helps stretch your hammies which are always tight when you have a low back injury and those nerves (sciatica etc) are getting compressed by the soft tissue injury.

Mine comes and goes nowadays. Pulling sumo over conventional can also be a lot kinder to those of us with fucked backs.

To everyone else don't fuck around with chiros or physios if you got a recurring back problem go straight to a back and neck specialist and get him to give you a refferal for an MRI

As fluffy says, getting that MRI is important!! Forgot to mention that!!! Thanks fluff.
I had sciatic pain beginning of this year, which flared up when I started with a new sprint coach. Deep tissue massage sorted it out. But there obviously was a problem there, now I look back on it.
This time nothing in particular, it was bound to happen though. When the surgeon saw my back, he knew I'd been a rugby player and heavy lifter for a long time just by looking at my spine.
Get that MRI and see what it says...
Good luck

This. You are better off throwing your money in the bin than going to a Chiro.

Thats what I am hoping for, a referral for a scan. I had a week off training then monday morning i did some cardio, walking and light running, plus a little ab work and its fine, tuesday did some weights with machines for the back and some hyperextensions, that was fine also but it comes and goes.

It's definitely limited to the lumbar area, doesnt hurt anywhere else but i did notice when i do some stretching, especially the stretch where you lie on ur back and bring ur knees up to ur chest and hold it, my hammies are definitely tighter than they were before. Also I'm a tradie so today I was carrying cables and switchboards and going up and down at least 10 flights of scaffold, it was starting to give in a bit. In the morning is worse when I first get out of bed, after a bit of movement, it seems ok. As long as I keep that natural arch in the lower back happening, its fine, the second I round out slightly, thats where the pain is. Thats why in the gym I am not too worried coz I always make sure my back is always supported, whether sitting down or lying down. I have a 4.30 appointment so we'll see what lies ahead.

Appointment for a doctor? As I said above, I'm going through the exact same thing, every detail is the same, so I'm keen to know how you go. I'm planning on seeing a doctor this week with a view to getting an MRI. But does the MRI go back to the doctor or would I then need to enlist a back specialist?

I'm still lifting, I am just not doing deadlifts. I should probably sit out squats too atm (I love them too much) as my back is sore today after legs last night.

You get the scans and results back or they can be sent to your referring GP, who will need to give you another referral to a specialist

ok, finished with the doctor, his recommendation is stay off the weights for a good 3 to 4 weeks until the pain is gone. He said its more of a discomfort than a pain (which it is coz i can still do my daily functions and its not radiating down my leg or anything) so he doesn't recommend a scan. Just keep taking the anti inflammotaries, however I can keep doing cardio like walking and light run but stay off the weights. Even in a seated or lying down position still stresses the back slightly. Also rub heat cream to keep the area warm and thats pretty much it. If pain is still there in a couple of weeks or so, go back and he'll take it from there. So far so good as in doesnt seem to be anything major.

I'd get a second opinion mate. No offense to your doc, but that's a pretty general treatment & observation of a sore back.
Definitely rest up, but IMO you need something more specific than that.
All the best with it
