It's not me! It's my thyroid!

So second male on my maternal side of the family got diagnosed with Graves' disease (hyperthyroidism). Decided to get this checked out after I looked up the symptoms on Wikipedia and found out that I had many of the symptoms (insomnia, hand tremor, hyperactivity, heat intolerance, weight loss despite increased appetite, frequent defecation, palpitations, high resting HR and skin warmth).

Would be pretty cool if my inability to gain weight was in fact a hormona problem as I would be able to unlock weightgain mode with a fairly simple fix. Get the blood test results on Thursday.

Inb4 my hormona levels are perfect

Thyroid hormona is an easy fix though
They just irradiate a bit of your thyroid with iodine until your hormona levels are normal

its ok, skin cancer is an easy fix, they just cut it out and BAM back to normal

I've gained about 5kg in the last 3 days.

Eating food does wonderful things for weight gain surprisingly.

I've got the opposite, I have hypothyroidism. It's obviously not good to have a hormonal imbalance but it's certainly good to know IF you have a hormonal imbalance.

I lost a load of weight and felt more energetic when I started taking my thyroid meds.

Man I just read up on treatment and they will nuke my entire thyroid and I will be stuck with no thyroid + T3 tablets for the rest of my life

want to gain weight? eat to discomfort twice a day.

still not gaining weight? go pick up some worming tablets from your local pet store.

Umm glad you wised up this. A friend of mine is on pills for life for this and has to be monitored on a regular basis. It's really not much fun at all.

Oni, you might not be eating as much as you think you do? Took me a fair while to come to grips with the fact I was eating less than I thought after lots of measuring and calcs (annoying crap that it is to do).
Still hard to gain for me too (no thyroid probs, have already been tested) but it's a matter of slowly increasing the amount I eat.

Eating until you feel sick is not a smart idea (tried it) but making gradual increases in serving portion sizes and extra snacks/meals/whatever will help over time.

I sincerely hope that your thyroid is 100% OK. never wish for an ailment, Oni.
