Fat Tax

I don't like the precedent being set.
I think Maccas and KFC etc are all crap and they already cost allot. If I was to take my kids to maccas, it would set me back $40 at least, that's not cheap! And I bet most fat people would spend that much at woolies so they could get more junk food for the money. Where does the line get drawn here? What about the local pizza shop? or local fish and chip shop?

I think the precedence being set is to tax all fatty foods.......thinking red meat here......personal responsibility must be taken into consideration. It's a socialist agenda to make out that people are to stupid to look after themselves so they must be 'guided' or 'made' for their own good......that's bull shit!

Maccas etc are businesses, not dictatorships......they are providing a service that is wanted/desired.....that is all. If people want it less, they will sell less.....it's that simple.

I think this is just a greedy grab by the shires to get money for something they know is a cash cow. I call bullshit that all the money will get put into healthy initiatives.

x100000 Good post Graeme!

well my father is obese , but it's not from eating junk food , it's very rare that he eats junk food , it's not from over consumption of food , his meals are average size , his weight issues is caused by medical problems which limits his ability to excercise

taxing fast outlets would be ok if they actually targeted fast food outlets , but no they are going to leave the mum and pop stores alone ( local take away and fish and chip shops ) and only target the big fast food outlets ( macca, kfc , hungry jacks) so while they may hide behind " we are thinking of your health " but in reality they are looking at traffic and which stores will bring in the most cash

tax them all or don't tax them at all

but i don't believe in taxing someone because of their lifestyle choice

First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Councils should stick to what they are hired for, Rubbish removal, street sweeping, road repairs and maintenance etc

Easy fix for all the ranting in this thread. Don't tax the business, tax the fatty. That will change some choices.

Behaviour modifying taxes, need to have certain characteristics. They need to be simple, they need to tax the target, they need to be high and they need to be avoidable. If you want to get into the head of a fatty, get into his pocket. Not the shop that he frequents, his pocket.

Something like this.

Everyone needs to submit records of quarterly, credible bodyfat analysis below 25% to avoid a 10% surcharge on their income tax. Bang. You have the thinnest country in the western world in 2 years. The Govt would get smashed at the next election too.

If your kids are obese you get sent to the salt mines in Siberia. Where's that PM for a day thread?

All other issues aside, this is a local COUNCIL calling for a huge rates rise on fast food chains.
Seriously, Councils have no right or power to impose anything like this, they are here to sweep our streets, remove garbage and maintain local infrastructure, which they barely do anyway.
In fact, I'm all for scrapping Councils altogether, they are a waste of our rates and taxes.

Human beings are clever, and also very stupid.

We are lazy and driven by biological mechanisms sometimes far beyond our control.

Imagine the your feelings of wanting to train/eat healthy then multiply it by 100 and think of that as a craving for food.

No one in their right mind would chose to end up like this. I believe there are some forms of obesity that are simply hardwired psychologically and physiologically. Geneticaly prone to, store fat, desire sweet, bad hormone profile. Neurotransmitters out of wack.

You can see how it can happen. Place this said person in an environment and you can see what happens, 'they' cannot control themselves and they end up like that.

Though their environment can not be to blame, otherwise everyone would be in the same situation. Although there are those powerful driving mechanisms behind the person someone either themselves or family needs to intervene. We need better support networks of family and friends and that equels 1 thing. Better education of people.

You know how much women dont know about cars guys? And im talking the relly dumb one who does know what goes in the 710 (yes sexism included). Well thats the average person today in regards to the human body.

What i hate in the world today is the acceptance welcoming with open arms of being obese. No one seems to accept paedophiles or alcoholics and smack addicts but hey they are psychological condition with physiological properties also? Why is it ok to accept one and shun others?

Do we ban pubs and school playgrounds to stop those problems? No... Thats retarded. Same goes here. People need to exercise self responsibility otherwise the precident is laid that everything anyone ever does is just hard wired into them and they have some how no responsibility.

I think if your 200kg ordering 5 big mac meals from mdonalds to eat in you should be refused service. The bottle shop wouldnt give you a bottle if you were drunk. Things need to change some how.

Although it might already be happening and simply Darwinism at work...

I agree with Sticky on this tax the fuck out of fast food. I do think it should be offset by making healthy food more affordable, get rid of GST on healthy whole foods.
I'm not sure exactly what you mean there, but as it stands, basic whole foods (or thereabouts) are GST-free.

You can thank the Democrats for that, with some kind of backhanded compliment, if you're so inclined. ;)

Anyway, stuff like fruit, veg and flour is GST-free, being the relevant bit.
