MELBOURNE man Troy Wilson lives and breathes with cystic fibrosis, and will attempt to break the mould by completely changing his life.
His ultimate goal is to compete at October’s International Natural Bodybuilding Association (INBA) Australian National Championships, his first bodybuilding competition, despite his life-threatening medical condition.
At 194cm tall and weighing in at only 80kg, Mr Wilson, 29, has set out to transform his body in just five short months.
Cystic fibrosis is a disorder of the cells that significantly affects vital organs such as the lungs, small intestines, sweat glands and pancreas.

Sticky, thick mucus contributes to the destruction of lung tissue and impedes gas exchange in the lungs, and prevents nutrient absorption in the small intestines, while blocking pancreatic ducts from releasing digestive enzymes.
Currently, there is no cure for this chronic degenerative illness.
As it stands today, only half of the people living with cystic fibrosis will live beyond 31 years.
“Doctors have said I’m going to kill myself, and dieticians seem to not understand what I’m doing,” says Mr Wilson.
“And my specialists, they basically think I’m crazy.”

Research has shown that a human body with cystic fibrosis burns 30 to 50 per cent more calories than average, just to cope with the internal challenges it faces in regards to the respiratory system and fighting off bacteria.
Mr Wilson is required to consume more than 30 tables a day, and must spend an average of three to five hours doing physiotherapy and airway clearance for his lungs to slow down the decreasing respiratory function – just to stay alive.
Overcoming adversity is something with which Mr Wilson has always had a close relationship, and this is just the next challenge.
“My persistence and dedication has bled into almost every area of my life,” he says.
“I’m excited for this journey, and for all who wish to follow.
“This has to become, and now is, my part-time job”.

It may seem outrageous, but Mr Wilson’s personal goal is to show anyone with or without a chronic illness that they too can accomplish their dreams, in the hope to inspire individuals and show everyone that regardless of what others may think, what you do is what matters.
Mr Wilson is documenting his bodybuilding journey on his personal Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/troynation) and via social media, to enable friends, family, and supporters to follow his day-to-day life achievements and struggles with cystic fibrosis while working towards his dream.

“I am going to journal and document everything – my feelings, thoughts, emotions, achievements, and struggles – and I will be 100 per cent open and honest, to keep myself accountable, and share this journey with the world,” he says.
Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the late age of four because of neglect, Mr Wilson is lucky to even be alive today.
He lives in Melbourne and his day-to-day life with cystic fibrosis, and is forced to run his own business to enable him to work around all the vital daily treatments.

Mr Wilson owns and runs a successful marketing and branding consulting company, Pink Zebra Designs, and considers himself a student of life, focusing on finding success and happiness in all forms, while championing the belief that life shouldn’t be lived small, and that we should all grow to our fullest potential.
