I am trying to be a shifty bugger and limit the bandwidth on my daughters devices, her phone, Ipod and Laptop as she is using all of our bloody data 2 weeks in to our billing cycle, then we get shaped. I know, we should be the good parents and talk to her, or take the shit away, and we have, problem is, she needs Laptop for school work and its near impossible to keep an eye on whats going on at all times. Most of the data, 100+gb seems to get used on downloading songs and watching countless hours of crap and music on youtube while she is doing her schoolwork, or I can see on the usage meter, that alot is used once I am asleep and the Mrs has just about crashed for the night.
So, I have been reading about this stuff, we have a Billion router. Just want to know if I have set it up right and whether her speed will be limited which will piss her off to no end :D Just dont want to give anything away and ask if its slow :o
First thing I tried was to filter keywords and sites through the routers firewall which worked, but for every device connected, apart from my phone could still view Youtube through the app, but this kinda sucks as we still want youtube on the PC.
Next thing, I got all the MAC addresses for all devices as they were turned on and the router tells me which device is which, set up static IP's for each device through the DHCP server and used the qos to throttle inbound and outbound for each connection for said IP's. I throttled them to 4*32kb
Will this have worked or what else should I do?
I am not into this computer shite but just want to shut down the usage so have been looking for a solution.
Any other suggestions?

Make sure its not one of your neighbours leaching on your wifi and mac spoofing (making their mac adress the same as one of your computers)

Have you enabled the parental control features ?
Does your billion have times for access control so you could block her devices between 11pm and 6am - or block torrents

Fuck I didn't know about Mac spoofing.

My guess for your culprit is torrents of blue ray /HD vids or HD streaming. (Or your neighbour is leeching)
 
The only thing that i know to do with spoofing and computers has to do with redtube.........damn u redtube!!!!!!!
 
Thanks Lex, I will try some of those listed thingymebobs. I watched on the router for each item as it connected when she got home so fairly sure its not one of the neighbours playing silly buggers. The router does have timeslot controls but fuck knows how to use them, and I can block torrents etc but I that will block them for all users including me.

what type of router do you have? some have more functionality than others. Eg one i recently set up for a coffee shop has 2 wifis in it, one for staff and one for customers. The 2 wifis have time limits (ie they dont work when shops closed so that people dont sit out the front and use it), they have different speed limits and have a list of what sorta traffic (ie http, email, torrent, etc) is allowed.

Ah ha, don't know if its as funky as that one, its a Billion something, certainly doesn't have 2 separate wifi's anyway. It does have time slot controls and other stuff. I will have to dig deeper if this hasn't sorted it and work something else out and sneakily install something on her Laptop, however that could fuck it up for when she is at school with it (new age paperless bullshit) where everything is done on the computer.
I did the same thing to my phone and used the qos on it to test it out and it certainly made it slower, so hopefully it has worked.
 
Didn't read all suggestions, but have you considered K9 browser (parental control browser)? You can block YouTube and whenever you or the wife wanna use it just enter the password.
 
Unless you make her account on her computer and other devices non-administration she will probably find ways around stuff on the comp.

I'd hp with putting time limits and stuff at the router level. You can always adjust temporarily if you want to download something. And it stop to a certain extend the setting up or torrents to download unattended.

If you can try and get info regarding the amount of downloads from different devices connected to the router. Always hos to have good evidence when approaching the guilty party.

Must have worked, usage is down by a mile and she started complaining about how slow her shit is now, sucked in to her, hahaha.

Thats a pretty good effort for a non IT person mate. No one I know would even know what an IP is.
