Something that I have notice now and then when I do my training, is that sometimes I see guys when they bench press, that they literally bounce the bar off their chest, like when using a basketball and watching the ball bounce lol.

Now isn't bouncing the bar of the chest potentially dangerous in the long run?

You generally wont find guys benching 140kg plus bouncing much, its generally lighter guys or those not very strong yet.

What bouncing does is mask the fact they dont have much starting power on the bench press, they need the momentum to generate enough bar speed to move the weight.

This is the reason most struggle with standing military press. No momentum, the lift starts at the bottom.

I cringe when I seee people recoiling the bar from their chest., i have actually heard kids being forced to breath out as the bar hits them,

It is usually the weaker guys just letting the bar fall down rather than lowering it down, controlled.

Ask them to pause at the bottom breath out and then in again, and then push it back up.

It hurts! I dont like to think what 90kgs concentrated into a 1 inch thick spot could do to my ribs.

There are some instances that you must bounce the bar off your chest, such as speed bench.

we wrap the bar with a towel and squat bitch pad.

You are only using 60% of your 1RM in most cases, still, big Nick got to over 100kg on speed bench.

Westside do it with squats, they put a large foam pad on the box for speed squats.

I just dont like to see it with a 1RM. A smart lifter controls the weight till its just off the chest, then uses that slight momentum to get the bar moving.

A dumb lifter lets the bar free fall from the top all the way to the chest.
