Hi. Was wondering what suggestions people may have for a MTB in the price range of $400-$500 price. Will be using it for road/bike paths and off road (gravel) tracks. Have in mind so far a GT Outpost, GT Avalanche, Diamond Back Outlook, Diamond Back Apex and Giant Boulder.

Does anyone have opinions on these or recommendations for any others.
Thanks

Giant Boulder is very good value for the price range, 24 speed, adjustable front suspension is very useful if you're on the road often.

The Trek 3700 & 3900 are in that bracket too. But when I asked my LBS what you get for your extra hundred dollars between the Giant Boulder and the Trek 3900, he said "not much, hubs are probably a bit better".

Thanks for the tip on the front suspension.

I'll be checking out the boulder this week and will also try the Trek 3700. I have also seen a Haro V2 for $449 which sounds pretty good so will try that to.
Seeing as i will be using it on the road I want to try and get a pretty light
Is the alloy frame the lightest type?

Alloy frames are the most common these days, they can be light or heavy, depending on the frame size, width of tubes, and components. Anything you're looking at in that price bracket will have some sort of aluminium alloy frame.

Pick a couple you like, ask for a test ride of each, buy the one you like best.
