I always measure from the knee to the hip, then find the centre.
I might get a bigger reading elsewhere, but at least I know that im getting the same spot every time so my gains/losses will be accurate.

pretty much spot on. Use a point on the bone like the top of the hip or ASIS (the bony bit at the front of the hip) and outside of the knee then halfway between
