No matter which method is used I've always preferred to do my workouts in blocks rather than mixing it up through the week.
Say, 3 or 4 months on a particular routine, this way it's easier to gauge the progression and much easier to log.

I agree - I generally will do something for a while.
My wife has started training with me though so I have to be more flexible to work in with her, e.g. I've got her on an upper/lower/upper/lower, but she could only make it for lower/upper/lower so i then did 2 days of push/pull seeing I had 2 days spare.
