50 year old competitive bodybuilder on TRT makes his first Reply to Thread on AUSBB!
G'day! I'm a newbie to this forum, and this particular thread is irresistable to me. You see, I'm now 50 and won my first bodybuiulding title in 1983 - at 21 years of testosterone-bubbling age I was 65 Kg, 178cm tall, ultra-ripped and 100% natural! My sex-life was like Justin Bieber's (I'm guessing) and I worked my way through two uni degrees before I set my sights on winning the ultimate ego-boost: A Mr Australia title.
So I won and placed in a few more regional titles before I realised that I was the only one on the National stage not juiced up, so I bit the bullet (cautiously) and got medical prescriptions for Sustanon in the early 90s, but still couldn't crack higher than 3rd in the Under 80 Kgs IFBB Mr Australia (That's me in my profile pic circa 1992). I wasn't really interested in abusing steroids, which was what I obviously needed to do to win that coveted national, so I eventually said farewell to my friendly GP and have been competing in one of the bodybuilding Natural federations since 1994.
But even there I have been frequently beaten by competitors who had won IFBB or NABBA (i.e. untested) State and/or Mr Australia titles just the year before. They passed the Naturals drug tests, but were they truly 'natural'? I just shrugged my cannon-ball shoulders and kept on growing bigger and stronger, slowly but surely: blessed to be mostly injury-free.
After a few year's hiatus spent working OS I returned to Oz and started lo-carb dieting again. My last competitions were in 2008 and I placed 2nd in both (Over 40 category, 86 Kg, fairly lean, but no longer shredded despite good diet and cardio regimes). Frustration ensued.
So ... I had my testosterone checked in 2010. My new GP had no hesitation in prescribing me daily Testogel 50 Mg and within a few weeks I was looking big and hard and now I'm thinking about competing again - in the over 50s Mr Australia - The question is: which federation?
I know I'm not 'natural', because natural for a 50 year old man is depressed, fat, weak and impotent. And I lift hard, heavy and often to the extent I'm always catching the eye of hot lycra-clad girlies (I'm happily single!) and fielding questions from young fellas about bodybuilding - wherever I travel around the world. But then I've never thought of bodybuilding as a bonafide sport - it's more like a beauty contest, hence my taking testosterone is no less ethical than getting my teeth whitened or sweating under a hairpiece like Ricky Ponting has recently taken to wearing.
Nevertheless, I can empathise with those Masters competitors in powerlifting or weightlifting who worry over the ethical dilemma of competing with a Therapeutic Use Exemption. We're not playing the same game, even though the balls are the same (no pun intended!). It's a tough question and I can't offer any comforting advice.
However, I'm very interested in other Old Man bodybuilder's opinions on testosterone replacement therapy, TUEs and competing. For example, do you stack anything else on your testogel? Have you tried peptides? Will you compete on Testogel in the Naturals or the untested feds? Feel free to post a reply or PM me!
