benchpress and pushups do target similar areas but in some ways they also target different areas (if that make sense ) , pushups you are limited by your bodyweight unless you go for weighted pushups
while pushups do have there place but i think you'd be better off just sticking to the bench press
unless of course you don';t have access to bench press equipment ( like while traveling )
it is a general rule that you have a days rest between workouts , gives the body time to recover , but this varies from person to person
