Training for the Police

Hey all,

I'm already fit and I've completed a Half-Marathon run ( 21.1km ) and I'm training for an IronMan. However, I want to build myself up for when I join the Police Force because I'm going to come accross some pretty big guys that are going to want to push me around.

Any tips to build myself up and prepare myself for the job ?

One of my old friends from school became a cop and he just did standard bodybuilding type stuff. He told me once being big is good because it intimidates people. Not sure if that helps or not. Compound exercises will make you the strongest and biggest in the shortest period of time.

I doubt you'll be able to build muscle while training for a marathon. Marathon runners aren't usually known for their huge muscular bodies. They burn too many calories.

Maybe if you ate 8000 calories a day you'd be able to put on muscle while training for a marathon.

Yes, that's my experience. When I was in the Army we trained more for fitness than strength, some of us did extra for strength.

Basically, if you want to rate everyone as

excellent
good
fair
poor
crap

it's not difficult to be of fair fitness and strength both, it's difficult but possible to be of good fitness and strength, and almost impossible to be excellent at both.

As a cop, you just have to decide whether you want to be better at scaring people (strength/bulk) or at catching them when they run away (fitness). Deterrence or apprehension? I've never seen a hulking cop above the rank of senior constable, so if I were you I'd focus on the fitness ;)

That and big guys already attract the wrong type of attention. Team a hulk's body with a police uniform? It's like asking to have someone punch you.

I know you wouldn`t.Just not possible to lug all that weight and do anywhere near a marathon.Plus the training on a gut that full would be murder.

Ronnie Coleman is a Police Officer. I would hate to be running from him.
