Torn Pec

Just wanted to know if anyone has recovered from a torn pec. Did mine while benching this morning and didn't sound good. Popped and the shoulder dropped a couple of inches. Nasty.

Markos (PTC) has one, never got it repaired, has since benched 150kg with it 10 years on I think.

His brother Spiros had two torn, also never got them fixed I don't think, and has since benched 160kg a few years on as well.

Personally if it were me I think I'd be getting them fixed/reattached. I think from memory Markos said when it happens you have only have a few days to get it reattached otherwise it can never be reattached.

I went straight up to the hospital and a repair was not mentioned. Pain relief and anti inflammation drugs with plenty of rest. I just want to get back to lifting.

Then get another opinion. You need surgery if its as bad as it sounds. Got to a good physio immediately and they can scan it and make a proper diagnosis.

Cheers,
Mike

If its torn off, like mine, it needs re attachment

I was black from my wrist to my hip on my right hand side

How much internal bleeding did you have?

Here are some pics
of someone who has just torn his pec

Find a sports doctor affiliated with a afl/rugby club. They see heaps of injuries and have good connections with surgeons.

GPs don't specialise in injuries, thus tend to know stuff all about them. I broke my foot, heard and felt it break. Went to the GP and he wouldnt even get me an X-ray. Said it was a minor sprain, ice and anti inflamms and I'll be right in 2 weeks.

Then went to a sports doc, he looked at it for 10 seconds and said shit it's broken, scans confirmed it.

What a fucken idiot doctor, seriously where do these guys get their paper from? *shakes head*

Sounds like a dislocated shoulder, not turn pec.
Definitely get it looked it. Most hospitals will at least do scans. Hard part is getting someone with half a clue to look at em

Thanks for the replies guys. Bruising starting to come out today. Not as bad as some of the photos (yet). I live in Weipa, a tiny mining town on Cape York so very limited medical facilities but flying into Brisbane Friday (Floods permitting) and will get it scanned.

Just a side note. Bad form is what caused the injury. I have a small shoulder injury on my left and at the bottom of the movement, it hurts so I am thinking that I was compensating with my right side which is where I got the tear.

Stupid but I just love to lift so now and paying the price. Lesson learnt, don't life heavy when injured.

Injuries will mainly occur through wear and tear. Bad form wont usually have you tearing pecs unless your a moron and allowing the weight to free fall.

Athletes tear muscles constantly, its called pushing the boundaries

Oh not at all. Torn muscles are not normal.

But I doubt any advanced powerlifter can claim to have never suffered an injury.

Adam Coe used perfect form, he suffered a career ending injury, same goes for Ed Coan etc

Most still have this thought that anyone that ever lifts a weight in poor form will get injured and anyone with perfect form is safe.

Its nonsense. Of all the lifters I've had at PTC, Nick gets the most injuries, yet he stretches, warms up, good form, great diet.

His problem was he got strong, nearing in on a 500lb squat and pulling over 600lbs, the body is not designed for that.

Doctors are just plumbers for the human body, even worse, at least a plumber knows how to fix all the problems he gets handed with. Doctors just play trial and error.

Wardy, I tore my pec benching 150kg in 1996, at the time my PB was 165kg.

I didnt lift again until 2003, that was for a brief 3 month period to fix my back.

In 2007 I benched 150kg with my still severed pec. I was 45yo and 90kg

The video is somewhere on youtube

The most problems I get with it now is actually deadlifting, it puts more tension on the pec than benching.

Whilst I never benched 165kg again, I'd say 150kg at 45 is close enough to full recovery

I should add mine tore off the bone, it wasnt simply a tear in the muscle. I have a hole there now
