The Dark Web

They said it's only our Medicare numbers which are being sold. Only 30 odd numbers have been sold so far. Not sure how they know that.

What do people stand to gain from Medicare details anyway?
 
So it's a place where you can deal in dodgy things.
Probably buy illegal drugs too, I assume?
 
there is dudes on youtube who show whats on it, pretty much drugs and porn...
 
download tor which allows you to access the dark web , and then google for onion links

not much a person can do with just medicare number , if they were selling the full package , dob , tax file etc , that would be something to worry about

In short, the dark web is a silly name given to content/servers on the internet that are not indexed by any search engine.

So say if there is a web site out there called www.whatthefuck.com, you can't google it, you can do any search for it. You can only type in www.whatthefuck.com into your address bar to start attempting to access the site.

There is also a massive amount of data out there not accessible from your browser either and needs specialised applications to access it. With a browser you only see HTTP data but there is also IRC, FTP etc

Generally though dark web = sites you cant google.

And as said, the dangers of all your medicare info being available means its easy for someone to buy an ID of someone else and do some forging/scamming/identity theft. Worst case i have seen is of a woman in WA who's house was legally sold by someone else. Not good at all.

takes a lot more than just a medicare card for that to happen , requires a bit more elaborate scam , stealing your mail and social engineering
 
It's not their medicare card they are taking, it's their medicare details... DOB, current address, occupation, phone numbers, family members etc
 
Didn't they say they think someone at a Medical Clinic has accessed the Numbers. People can then, after having stolen someone's details elsewhere combine them as proof of identity and steal your Identity?
