To keep a bike and all its parts in good condition, you must clean and lube it regularly. For daily riders this means about once a week in winter and once every 2 weeks in summer. For those who only ride leisurely, this means after any off-road trip or ride over 40 miles. Try to lube your bike after cleaning it.
What to do:
1. Spray lube the brake pivots being careful to not get it on the pads or rims.
2. Spray lube the center of the pulley wheels to keep them running smoothly.
3. Lube each of he main pivots on the rear gear mechanisms, the top pivot and the chain cage pivot. Then wipe them lightly.
4. Lube the front derailleur on all 8 pivots. Lube around the chain cage and the gear shifters. Lube any point where the inner gear cable turns a corner.
5. The chain must be soaked with spray lube first. Give it time to penetrate, then give it a coating of heavy oil to back it up.
6. Lube the brake levers on the pivots. Pull the brake lever so you can lube the brake cable. If you leave the nipple dry the cable may fray so lube it also.
7. Lube the front brake pivots.
8. Lube all of the cables. Remove the housing from the top and squirt lube down it.
