Steroids have been reclassified as a schedule one dangerous drug under new laws aimed at reducing drug and alcohol-fuelled violence in Queensland.
The changes, passed by State Parliament on Tuesday night, mean they are now classified alongside heroin, cocaine and amphetamines in the highest category of dangerous illicit substances.
It also increases the maximum penalty for possession or supply of steroids to 25 years in jail.
The new laws were passed as part of the State Government's Safe Night Out legislation to tackle drug and alcohol use.
The latest Australian Crime Commission statisticsshow in the 2012-13 financial year, more than half of the nation's steroid arrests were in Queensland.
Last year, the weight of steroids seized in Queensland increased more than 20 times from 216 grams to 4.6 kilograms.
There were 392 steroids-linked arrests in Queensland in 2012-13, compared with 296 the previous financial year.
[h=2]Police find steroid stashes in two Gold Coast raids[/h]The change in classification came after police targeted steroids in a series of raids on the Gold Coast this week.
Officers from the state's anti-bikie squad, Taskforce Maxima, found tablets, syringes and drug vials during a raid on a Runaway Bay home on Monday morning.
Two men were charged over the matter and are due to face court next month.

In a separate raid on a house in Runaway Bay on Tuesday morning, officers found $25,000 worth of steroids and charged a 26-year-old man with drug offences.
Taskforce boss Detective Inspector Brendan Smith said steroids were a growing problem.
He said the arrest came as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged illegal sale of steroids by criminal motorcycle gangs.
"Our investigations reveal how these gangs do not limit themselves to traditional offences, they identify vulnerable members of the community and exploit them," he said.
"The illegal sale of steroids and their inappropriate use sees increasing community concern.
"We are seeing users increasingly involved in crimes of violence and with ongoing health problems."
[h=2]MP warns of growing steroid user subculture[/h]In Tuesday night's parliamentary debate, Bulimba MP Aaron Dillaway said his constituents had raised concerns about the use of steroids.
"The unsupervised use of such substances can potentially harm the individual and have been linked to aggression and violent behaviour," he said.
Mr Dillaway also warned against a growing "bruss" subculture in Queensland.
"A term I have been told is used by our younger generations to describe a person who devotes his entire time shredding and mass bulking at the gym and may use steroids to enhance this process."

Lol.

That's a fairly significant legal change though. What are those exotic coloured injectables up the back there?

According to the definition above if you go to the gym and are concerned with putting on size or losing fat you are 'bruss'. This whole stigma really needs to be dispelled, it's really unfortunate.

I was under the impression that they were already classified that way and had been for years. Must have been wrong but it doesn't matter now.

When was the last steroid overdose death or the last mugging that was linked to a steroid user getting their fix? I fail to see how the risk to the public can be compared to the other illegal drugs or even the legal ones.

I think they fear and associate them with the old roid rage story

I have never seen a steroid rage punchup in a gym in all the years I have been in gyms, but go out to the clubs on any given night and you will always see a alcohol fueled punchup.

They should ban alcohol instead.

They did the same in NSW. Penalties for importation went from 2 to 25 years. Same as heroin and other class 1 drugs. Some dick went down to Kings Cross and king hit a number of people, last guy died after hitting his head on the pavement. Offender was using steroids apparently at the time so it was steroids that made him do it and not the fact he was very intoxicated.

That's it, they are testing post incidents and finding alcohol and gear in the blood system.

Yeah its pretty fugged up. All the studies so far (that I've heard of) indicate that steroids do not cause "roid rage". There was a pretty good study done that found stanazolol reduced aggression response, testosterone slightly increased aggression response and trenbalone increased aggression response moderately. The responses were not a result of sudden "rage" but in response to unsolicited aggression and the conclusion was rather than rage it was more likely a result of increased assertiveness.

Another study found that Testosterone Propionate administered over a 3 week period to both isolated individuals and non-isolated individuals increased aggression response in individuals who were isolated but did not increase aggression in individuals who were not isolated. The non TP isolated individuals and the TP isolated individuals didn't have a significant difference in aggression response. The conclusion was that testosterone did not increase aggression but rather isolation did.

When the increased aggressiveness induced by protracted TP treatment in SI mice is compared with the relatively low level of aggression noted in GH mice, one may suggest that TP does not induce aggression per se but sensitizes mice responsiveness to environmental stimuli. Thus, our results confirm previous reports (34-37) indicating that TP and other AAS fail to induce aggressive behavior per se but they can lower the threshold of irritability induced by provocative environmental stimuli (36, 37).

In short it means that if you wack a guy using AAS, he's more likely to turn around and kick your ass than a guy not using AAS. :)
