I like pull/chin ups more then pulldowns although i've only found out since being able to do 10+ reps on chins have l been able to 'contract/feel my lats working more. I think doing both would be the best idea, get the best of both worlds.
Pull ups are one of the best back exercises. If your strong enough, try bringing the chins bar to your upper pecs. Once you can easily do chins like that, then add some weight.
I believe pull downs are easier because of the leverage advantage you can move the torso at mid point to lessen the resistance, you can't really do that when chining unless you kip, even then a lot of energy is wasted at the most important area of the exercise
