overtraining a muscle group

In a single workout how is it possible to overtrain a muscle group?
unless i have read it wrong but from my understanding once a muscle is broken down from training it, you can't break it down any more.

If you start to train the muscle group again before it has fully recovered, then you'll cause damage to the muscle as it's not ready to be worked again.
