Hi All,

so in 11 weeks i will be competeing in True Grit Obstacle Course race and due to me suffereing some chest infections (Cystic Fibrosis). i have only just manage to get myself ready to start training again. but my dilema is what sort of training should i do?

I know i will need to get my cardio up for running but as for strength i am unsure whether or not i should stick to things like tyre flips, burpees, squats, pull ups, push ups

or

start the PTC's Beginner Routine.

Any advice is welcome.

Cheers

If that's your short term goal, then I would be looking at what obstacles are in the course and train with those type of movements.
If it was a longer term goal, or you had a lot more prep time, then do something like PTC's beginner program. Just my opinion but 3 months of compound movements will pack on some size/strength but probably won't be as much of an advantage compared to 3 months of direct training. You will need endurance/stamina/cardio training as well which the PTC style program does not deliver.

Incorporate some conditioning work into the beginner program. Alternate conditioning days with weight days.

I could be wong, but I thought those things had training programs available for people looking to participate in them? ive heard it for tough mudder or something on radio..

if not, Im pretty sure military type stuff would be good? unless Im thinking of the wrong type of obstacle course.

it must be said, I am not a professional of any sort, unless you count time wasting

by the looks of there video it looks similar to tough mudder, and after doing it last year if I was to advise someone on training for tough mudder, I would get them to get comfortable running the distance of the event(preferably with a few hills) and thow in some bodyweight exercises, chinups/rope climbs ect, but usually the obstacles are not to difficult, the guys I did mudder with last year spent a lot of time in the gym and not enough time running and struggled with cramps ect due to the body not being use to the distance

Spartan website has workout plans and WOD type thing for running and be bw stuff

Cheers guys, my long term goal is to pack on size and strength. Doing these courses are just a huge accomplishment for myself since i only have 57% lung function and i am raising funds for the CF association
