I've had a few people talk to me about this but am not 110%....
This would be a question for the people out there that have given up weights for a time (months, years) and then went back to it.
Muscle memory = True or False ?
By this I mean when a person comes BACK after a long break from weights are things easier for them in the gym and gains quicker ?
(since there muscles have the memory of past workouts? LOL dunno drawing straws on that....)
or
(may just be a confidence booster to get you the F*uck back in ?).
From what i understand and this could be completley wrong but im putting it out there anyway.
How can a muscle remember? To start with... I tink it is the neruological side of things. i.e you have built the neurons from training. The muscle fibres have decreased in size but the neurons still remain.
You do not have to rebuild these neurons so getting back to it is alot faster as this process doe snot need to occur.
truth .. ive quit for 6 months in the past and come back to the same size shape within 4-5 weeks of dedicated training..
U also find your strength is the first to come back followed by muscle mass. The time it takes to get back to this level also depends on your age as well. Its slower than when you were younger of course.
Noobs gave you the answer. You develop greater neural pathways that remain there once you stop training. So your muscles can atrophy and you can not lift for a year and then come back and reactivate those neural pathways very easily and in a few months you are lifting heavy loads again. Since your neural pathways are there the muscle has to play catch up and strengthens faster.
Don't forget your muscles are controlled by your brain (which has memory) they do not just do things by themselves.
